Am I mistaken or has guitar strings gone up a lot in price. I was in on Elderly Instruments site, the first time in a year or more, and it seems that the price of strings has gone up in price quite a bit. Most I am seeing are brand names, so maybe that is the reason, paying for the name. Even guitar picks seem to be up. Time I pay the exchange rate on the money and the shipping charges, I will not save much from buying them around here one set at a time. Any other place to buy strings at a better price?

Well, I have no idea what you are paying or where or what you need. Having bought stuff from Musician's Friend I get E-Mails all the time on deals they have. Haven't bought strings for a while but you can check what they are offering and if they ship to Canada. Seems I paid around 3.39 per set so you can check on their Web site for current prices.

Everything has gone up. They wanted to charge me $13.50 yesterday for a senior haircut. I walked out. I guess there is no end to it.

Don't you have a local music store? Why do you have to order them? There's a music store just a few blocks from me. Darcos are still five bucks a pop for phosphor bronze strings.

John Personally, I cut my own hair, what's left of it, and use the Baseball Three Strike Rule: If I look in the mirror, and something looks wrong...I let it slide, but Strike One. If I look in the mirror and the same something looks wrong...I let it slide, but strike two. If I look in the mirror and see the same something? Strike three and out come the scissors to snip it off... It all evens out.... Dang! Who sidetracked Everett's serious question??? Midnite

Yes we have music stores here but strings cost (or use to cost, haven't bought any in late year) double or more than I could buy them on line. I use to buy Darcos from Elderly but couldn't see any there yesterday. Maybe I didn't dig deep enough, they have a lot of pages to dig through.

I see on Musician's Friend the strings I use, Martin's M170 are 40. something now for a set of 10. That's 4.40 dollars each or so for a six string set. Haircuts? My barber now charges $20.00. Well, It's only money, Eh?

In Houston Martin strings have been about the same for years. The sticker price of 80/20 bronze is about 12 bucks but a couple of stores sell them for 8-10 if I recall correctly. Sometimes cheaper. Having said that inflation may be starting to move.

I read one time that there is only two or three string manufacturing plants in the US, even though there are dozens and dozens of brands you can buy. So the cheaper brands may be the same strings that are in the expensive brands, but we pay more because of the name on the package. I've been buying the cheaper brands and they sound good to me, good enough for writing songs anyway. I don't play out very much so it doesn't matter.

Well, I imagine the parts of a string are manufactured by the same company and sold to the different string companies. Yes, you may pay more for the strings from one company than another but it is the same string.
