Perhaps because of my English/French Canadian background, I've long wanted to write an English song that incorporated some French words that are also quite common in the English language. This is my attempt. Intended for a female performer. Music/melody is almost complete (I'll be recording my own demo, as usual). All comments most welcome and appreciated.

MIDNIGHT RENDEZ-VOUS
© 2002 Tom Guertin All Rights Reserved

(Verse 1)
Dry red wine and baked hors-d'oeuvres
Moonlight drives hug coastal curves
Waves splash 'round the catamaran
As you bask in the arms of another man...

Midnight rendez-vous

(Chorus)
When love craves
A midnight rendez-vous
Then your heart
Must bid adieu
When forbidden love
Feels like déjà-vu
Under the cover of night
A midnight rendez-vous

(Verse 2)
Romantic walks along the boulevard
Your new love feels so avant-garde
Dreams of flight to the resort of Cannes
Spread your wings for another man...

Midnight rendez-vous

(Chorus)
When love craves
A midnight rendez-vous
Then your heart
Must bid adieu
When forbidden love
Feels like déjà-vu
Under the cover of night
A midnight rendez-vous

(Bridge)
Curled-up in bed in a moonlit room
Feeling like you've committed a sin
With your soul-mate lying next to you
You're lost in another Harlequin...

(Chorus)
When love craves
A midnight rendez-vous
Then your heart
Must bid adieu
When forbidden love
Feels like déjà-vu
Under the cover of night
A midnight rendez-vous

(Chorus)
When love craves
A midnight rendez-vous
Then your heart
Must bid adieu
When forbidden love
Feels like déjà-vu
Under the cover of night
A midnight rendez-vous

Should turn out to be quite a moving piece. Wonderful lines throughout! Here's my absolute favorite:

When forbidden love
Feels like déjà-vu

Just WONDERFUL!!

Tom,
That was sweet. I could hear the music too. There's nothing I would change..well maybe using Harlequin but that's no biggie.

Take Care

Yeah what a great twist [Linked Image]

Cindy, I find it a bit ironic that you replied first. Look carefully at the structure and you may recognize something. I wrote this lyric today in about 15 minutes 'cause I had to -- I've had this music/melody in my head for a few days. You see I wrote this tune in anticipation of another lyric, but... [Linked Image]. You'll be the first to hear it.

Graham, Trudi, Ria and Bill, thanks guys -- glad you like it.

Tom, I recognized it the moment I read it, before I even reached the chorus!! And I love it, love it, love it!! Very talented man, you are...

Hi Tom,

Ok...ya suckered me on this one. I was thinking it was something else..and whap..upside the head. LOL Very sneaky...but well done. I think Harlequin works because it is the only one people really know well enough to associate with it.

This is nice, Tom. When I read your preface, though, I was hoping you would've put all the French words into one line or something, a la "Voulez vous couche avec moi" from "Lady Marmalade." I think that would work better than sprinkling them throughout the lyric like you have here. This comes across to me as using French words for French words' sake. But oh well. It's still a good lyric anyway. I don't think you sing your hook just before the chorus, though..... do you?

Well, anyway, nice job and good luck. [Linked Image]

Bobbie, ya know, I wrote the bridge not intending to go with a twist at all. The rest of the lyric was written and I had the first three lines of the bridge completed and I was trying to think of a rhyme for 'sin'. I was going through the rhyming alphabet in my head when 'Harlequin' popped-out of my mouth. The realization that that word created such a 'perfect' twist immediately hit me upside the head just like it did you. It was a great feeling for me. I agree that 'Harlequin' may be the only one of its type really recognized (but I wouldn't know for sure). Thanks.

Anthony, "Voulez vous coucher avec moi" -- gawd, how I hated that song. It never occured to me to take a whole phrase in French (that would have to be overtly sexual IMO) and try and 'create' a new 'anglaisisme' out of it. Rather, as you can see, I wanted to use those French words that had become virtually accepted as 'English'. I prefer it that way. As for singing the hook just before the chorus? Yep, but it will probably be more whispered. Thanks for your views Anth. Always appreciated.

Tom

Greetings, Tom... Being a newbie, I'm still a bit tenuous about posting replies yet so please bear with me. I adored this! I, too, was hoping it would have a bit more French, but it works incredibly well blending in what you have. Billy Joel (one of my fave writers) did a English/French song called "You Are The One".... if you haven't heard it, try finding it. It might inspire you to take take the french a bit further. This is incredible and so unique. Unfortunately, I don't "hear music" as others do, but I'll be anxious to follow up to what you do with this? A thought since you know the language... I had thought a while ago that the translation for "Extension pour l'amour" or "Marchez Dans L'Amour" might lend to some interesting blended language lyrics... Strong english lyrics with French replies, mixed chorus, bridge? But I digress.... thank you for sharing this. I really did enjoy it.

Hi Teri. First, I tried to listen to your song "Just Let Me Sleep" a little while ago, and I only get the register/login screen. I'm not one who likes to register when I'm not using the site myself. I tried what Graham suggested, and no luck there either. Then I tried Ria's link, and I started to stream it, but my dial-up isn't fast enough. I'd download it if i could (will take me 20 min., but no prob). The couple of seconds I could hear suggest to me that it seems like it'll be real good, so if there's a way to get it better, please advise in your post of that song. Regarding my lyric, thanks for your feedback -- glad you like it. As for the Billy Joel song, I've probably heard it, but it doesn't come to mind right now. As for "Extension pour l'amour" or "Marchez Dans L'Amour" lending to some interesting blended language lyrics?, I'm not sure that the former would be that interesting, but I believe that the later would. It's be fun and a challenge for you to try. Good luck if you tackle it, and thanks again.

Dan, merci beaucoup, monsieur.

Hi, Tom, Love this, like others I expected a different kind of French inclusion, but this works,
- as for sin...je ne regrette rien,

Tom,

As far as SongRamp...not sure why, but it seems only the download works(for me anyway). If you want to listen, you have to download the file. Been there, done that. Dano. [Linked Image]
