Nobody....Pinch Me if I'm Dreaming
© 2002 Tony Gunter and Harriet Ames

vs1
My heart beats faster
It's hard to breath
Every time I see her
Smile at me
Too early for love
Too late for friends
If you're listening, Lord
Don't let it end

Chorus
Nobody...pinch me if I'm dreaming
I hope that the words all come out right
I've waited all my life
Least that's how it's been seeming
So nobody...pinch me if I'm dreaming

vs2
Every step she takes
She's closer now
I remember what
Hope I still know how
She's got big brown eyes
One winks at me
When she says hello
My knees go weak

Chorus
Nobody...pinch me if I'm dreaming
I hope that the words all come out right
I've waited all my life
Least that's how it's been seeming
So nobody...pinch me if I'm dreaming

Bridge
I fell hard tonight
She feels so fine
Here in my arms is
Every dream of mine

(last Chorus)
Nobody...pinch me if I'm dreaming
I know, now, the words all came out right
I've waited all my life
Least that's how it was seeming
So nobody...pinch me if I'm dreaming.

So nobody...pinch me if I'm dreaming

Terrific work. I hear a little more work on the bridge. I think the first chord needs to go even further way from the key of the song...that's just me.

All the Best,
Mike

Hi Harriet!

Long time no see.

Hope things are going well for you down there.

How does it feel to hire a demo done? I've got a couple songs I've considered having demoed. I'm just too cheap tp spend the money! [Linked Image] Especially considering all the money I've got tied up in recording gear.

I wonder sometimes if that money wouldn't have been better spent on demoes! [Linked Image]

Your demo sounds real good. The music/melody reminds me of a musical style I can't put my finger on... some sort of folk/pop our of the late seventies? I can't place it but it seems familiar.

Whatever it is it it was a nice listen.

Nice to see your still out there.

I saw Tugboat a while back. He had a number of mini disk recording from some live shows with him and Liam. And he wanted them taken off the discs and seperated into tracks and put on a CD.

It was quite the project but I eventually got it done. Although I'll admit, not in a timely fashion.

I was able to send him out of here though with a CD and quick label. We pulled some artwork off his IUMA site and put it into the CD labeler program and printed out a sticky label. Simple but effective.

Not much more news on this ends.

Had mushrooms for dinner last night... hee hee! [Linked Image]

Curtis

P.S. That chorus is a little catchy, it's still running through my head.

Thanks Mike,
well as you know, sometimes the bridge is just an excuse to sing the chorus again. [Linked Image]

In this case I envisioned the song being sung slightly faster. And since I don't play instrumental bridges (or breaks) very well myself, I rarely write them. But this time with the length here being short enough, I was thinking it would be perfect there. and just pull back somewhat into the bridge and then back to the chorus.
But I can see your point about that opening chord there.

HI!

This is very sweet. I love the chorus. My daughter always says "Don't wake me if I'm dreamin'" so the title caught my eye right away. This was a pleasure to listen to [Linked Image]
Think you have done a great job.

Hey Curtis,
glad to see you got your speakers back in place. As I recall, you weren't that close to the water. How'd you flood out your room?
geez, I'm still giving off the folk vibe? was kinda thinking this one was more country than most of mine.
This one is a true colab. Like me, whenever Tony writes lyrics there is a melody coming with it. And he wasn't completely sold on my chorus music. (well, neither was I) He sang it over the phone twice to me. But both times, by 10 minutes later, all i could remember was my original music. So finally, we got into the modern age and he sent me a music file. And voila! they fit together. (with only slight changes)
sooooo....... that catchy chorus that's staying with you, is Tony's.

to record yourself, or to pay for demos. that is the question. is always debatable. If I had all your equipment, I'd still have to find the competent musicians to play (and sing) and coordinate time to lay down tracks. (which I remember has been a problem at times for you as well)
But if you can pull it off, nothing beats being able to have direct input on the recording process. (one more take please....... no that lines doesn't go like that........etc)
On the other hand, if you're dealing with a high quality demo service, they might add something, or tweak it just a little different than you had thought of and end up with somethiing even better.
it's a toss-up. Now, if I could BE THERE when the demo is done, that would be best. (but not practical right now [Linked Image]

Yes, I remember Tug telling me about those recordings. I'd love to have a copy of that cd. Liam's playing can be pure magic. Will have to contact him.
mushrooms! sigh, ..actually......you know....... my husband has been talking with a U of N Tex prof about starting up another mushroom farm. No! we wouldn't run it. We'd only be involved as consultants. but it's all still just a lot of talk.

Hey Harriet,

Yeah, okay... So... "How did I flood my living room?"

You just want to make me feel stupider than I already do huh?

Okay, it's sorta funny anyway.

I had a broiler pan that was covered with barbeque sauce from some prok ribs and I figured I would soak it in a sink full of water. So... I put it in the sink and turned the water on. I got distracted by something, then decided to plug in a movie...

TWO HOURS LATER, I walk into the kitchen only to find water running down the front of the cabinets and Lake Keyport in the kitchen. And of course it was 12:30 at night...

And of course the counter was flooded, the drawers were full of water, the cabinet was flooded, the floors etc..

I had to basically dissasemble my entire kitchen and half the living room, pull up the carpet, cut out the pad, yadda, yadda, yadda. Luckily I had a good stack of towels to sop things up with.

And you've seen my house, there wasn't much room to move my desk around in the living room so it was pretty crowed trying to access my PC for a few days.

Sigh, fun, fun, fun!

Anyway, I use the term folk loosely on this song, it just reminded me of a genre I can't define. Maybe someone else could come up with something.

Gotta run. Work as usual.

Thanks Graham,
I agree, a little steel would be cool. just a bit more filled out on the instruments.

Thanks Trudi,
yeah, that chorus line is part of what drew me in when I first read Tony's lyric. (that and I could feel how the verse ought to fly)

Curtis! can you say "OOOOOOOPS!"?
must be something in the Kitsap water. Took a little of that with me when I moved. was here about a week and went to make myself a quick cup of instant coffee in the microwave. stick the coofee mug in the nuke machine and left the room for the 2 minutes it took to run. Came back to the smell of burnt wiring. Had put coffee in my cup, left the metal spoon in it, and forgot to put any water in. YIKES!!!!! microwaves are SOOOOO unforgiving! most expensive cup of coffee I ever had. But I'm smarter now. [Linked Image] won't happen again.

Hi Harriet & Tony!

GREAT Hook..Lotsa Fun to read! (Sorry I can't get the Music on Webtv!)

In Chorus, maybe zap that "That" & try
"I'm HOPIN' the Words all come out right"
Next line, would be clearer if it went
"I've waited FOR THIS (for) all of my life"

Maybe Last Chorus Cycle, try "This moment seems So Redeeming..." heh!

Overall a "KUDOS" for a Fun, Fine Song, & again, LOVED your Hook, Kiddos!

Big Hugs,
Stan

Thanks Stan,
well I could see swapping the "that" for your suggested "hopin" , yeah, that might be a tash smoother.
The other two suggestions don't fit the music smoothly.
But thanks for the ideas. (always love to get new ideas)

Thanks Kaley,
perfect? I'll never get tired of seeing that word [Linked Image]

Thanks Jean,
glad you liked it. In my biased opinion, I think Tony's lyrics are among the best, and they usually lead me in great musical directions.

Howdy Harriet & Tony,

Comin' on to tell you how much I like this is a bit anticlimactic, since you already KNOW that...but I DO love this!! Excellent music for some great lyrics. Arvel did another great job on this demo.

In response to Curtis' comment about doing his own demos, after listening to a publisher/plugger last night at NSAI who indicated that most A & R folks these days can spot the difference between real musicians and computer processed music at 1000 yards, I don't think I'd even attempt to do my own these days with the competition as stiff as it is. Not if I wanted to get picked up. She also reiterated that unless you have a truly spectacular voice it is always best to have a real demo singer do your demos. At one point she even stopped and asked the person who had brought one song who the singer was because she recognized the voice. Bound to happen when the best ones are "known" in town. A couple of other cautions..don't put the terms "field of dreams" or "Paradise" in a song these days. Apparently a no-no..as is putting a harmonica in an intro (which my song had). You never know till you're told.

However, the MOST interesting thing I found, however, in listening to the 40+ songs that got played there (and this was Nashville) was that MOST of them had very obvious lyrical flaws that would have been caught on here immediately. This place really IS the best!!!

Sorry to take up so much space on your thread here. This really IS a great song IMO.

Bobbie

Thanks Bobbie,
I agree. I think we got more than we asked for with this demo.
Great info you added. Funny thing, I was reading a debate on another board recently, and this self-proclaimed know-it-all was trying to convince everyone of the superiority of processing music. Guess he doesn't know it all. [Linked Image]
wow.interesting list of overused terms. Didn't know that many songs were laden down with "Field of Dreams"
Thanks for the updates. always good to hear what seemingly innocent things that we might overlook are no-nos.

Hello everyone!!!
Thanks for all the listens and kind words. I appreciate Harriet giving the answers on the key question! C huh?...well that sounds good to me too. Is all my musical ability showing??? Brush Hill is a great place to get a demo done...very reasonabl and a lot of options to choose from with graduating costs from piano/vocal to full blown. I've had both done and was really impressed with their finished product. After a couple months of turmoil around here this is a really nice way to come back and my first thank you has to go to my very talented co-writer, Harriet. She kept saying this was a good tune... Thank you all again,
Tony

Thanks Joanne,
and extra thanks for the story. HOW COOL IS THAT?!?!?
8 years? looooong time......especially to me who only dated my hubby for 8 months (and one day) before getting married.

Enjoyed the listen, Harriet and Tony! Trying to catch up a bit on the board since I lost pretty much the last couple of weeks getting ready for my daughter's wedding. You must really be busy too, Harriet -- another website for your music! [Linked Image]

Hi Harriet/Tony

What a sweet song this is, really nice. I remember the lyrics from a while back.

Good job!

Thanks Ray,
you're always so sweet to me.
But, I get the feeling from what you say that you read the lyrics only and didn't get a chance to listen to the music. And if so, then I have to give credit where credit is due. I made very few changes to the words here, so what you read is Tony's song. and I agree, Tony really did write some great words.

Thanks Dawg,
but NO NO!!! don't swear! Bobbie will slap you silly for that I'm sure. And if she thinks I'm to blame, she'll slap me silly too. (and I'm silly enough [Linked Image]

Thanks Mary Lou,
glad you liked it.
Nice to see you back here a little more.
Hope your daughter's wedding was beautiful.

Yeah, I decided it was time for concentrate a little more on my co-writes with Tony. (He didn't have his own page yet, so I thought he could share one with me)

Thank you Nige,
yep, Tony posted these lyrics last summer. I loved them then, and I still do. (just reached out and grabbed me [Linked Image])

Really solid work guys! I enjoyed this a bunch. The tune (thanks in small part to the singer) reminds me of a Bruce Robison song (none in particular, just his style)...and that's a good thing, he wrote the Dixie Chicks' 'Travellin' Soldier' and Tim Mcgraw's 'Angry all the time'. Anyway, hope you're pitching this one soon!

Hi you two!!! (seems there are lots of collabs to comment on tonight)

This was really sweet. It does seem kind of folky, which I like. It reminds me of someone too but I cant place it. It's driving me crazy (as I listen to it for the third time [Linked Image] ) OH OH...it sounds a little like Billy Dean!!
Wow, that was going to haunt me!
Take Care

Thanks Corey,
Reminds you of Bruce Robison?
Wow, coming from you that means a lot.

Thanks Ria,
ooooooh Billy Dean. hmmmmmmm I vaguely remember him. I at least remember that I liked him. (not much else) but then I went through such a hazy period between then and now. (feels like decades)
Yep the pitching process is just starting.
Still some traces (or more) of folk? I suppose I'll never completely escape my folk roots. At least I'm more at ease with that label than I used to be. [Linked Image]
