Hey All!
You guys are really coming through with some great, great memories! Keep 'em coming!
Hey, Steve West...the only song I know of named "Next Plane To London" was in 1967 by "The Stone Ponies". Linda Rondstat was the lead singer. Their only other hit under that band name was "The Beat Of A Different Drum" From there, Linda left the Stone Ponies and went on her own, but kept several of the Ponies as her band members when she went solo. Or...are we thinking of two different songs?
Also, about the time of Al Green, who had that song "Kung Fu Fighting?" Were they/he a one hit wonder as well? And, did Louden Wainwright III do anything big besides "Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road?"
Man, what a bunch of memories popping up here!!!!!
Amd whomever said "Drift Away" by Doby Gray...super! And along that same thought, did Percy Sledge ever have another big song after "When A Man Loves A Woman?"
Here are few more that I actually remember (I am an old fart, you know!!):
"Let Me Tell You About The Birds And The Bees" Jewel Aiken "Sunny" Bobby Hebb (Another of my favorites) "Seasons In The Sun" Terry Jacks "Almost Persuaded" David Houston "Hold Me, Thrill, Me, Kiss Me" Mel Carter (He had a couple of other minor hits, but this was his onely big hit) "Help Me Make It Through The Night" Sammy Smith "Pretty Little Angels Eyes" Curtis Lee "Sukiyaki" Kyu Sokamoto (The Only Non-English song to make Number 1 on the American charts.)
Just a few for consideration.
Al

Re Status quo I would hardly call them one hit wonders. They have had numerous UK hits since sixties and are still huge. "Rocking all over the world" is just one of their classic anthems.

Al, I'm not sure if The Stone Ponies covered the song or not. The version I know was by The Rose Garden. From Wikipedia: The Rose Garden was a folk rock musical group from Los Angeles, California which was active in 1967 and 1968. The members were Diana DeRose on lead vocal and acoustic guitar, John Noreen on 12-string guitar and backup vocal, James Groshong on lead vocal and guitar, William Fleming on bass and Bruce Bowden on drums. In 1967, they signed with Atco Records and had enjoyed a hit record with "Next Plane To London" which reached #17 at the end of that year. They released their self-titled album on April of 1968 which includes the hit song. Subsequent releases were unsuccessful and dissention within the group led to its breakup by the end of 1968.Big Jim: I had no idea that the Staus Quo was still around. "Pictures" is the only song I ever heard by them and the only song that is ever played on the radio around here.

Remember "Eres Tu" by Mocedades? It was a rare non-English song that did fairly well. The group was from either Spain or Mexico. It was one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard. You didn't even have to understand Spanish to appreciate it. The flip side of the single was an English version called "Touch The Wind," also pretty, but couldn't touch the Spanish version.
And, I believe Carl Douglas did "Kung Fu Fighting," whoever mentioned that one.

The singer of "Kung Fu Fighting" was indeed Carl Douglas {It was voted the worst song of all-time by some publication} I don't think Al Green would have stooped to recording such tripe!{LOL} As far as Percy Sledge, I think "When a man" was his only BIG hit, which is a shame, cuz everything he ever recorded was great! As a Singer I'd put him right there with Cooke, Redding, Pickett, and Green.

Cooke, Redding, Pickett, Green...wow...what a lineup! We have a station here in St. Louis, 95.5FM, that plays almost exclusively Motown and "Soul". I check it out an hour or two every day! Good stuff.

Steve...
You are correct about "The Rose Garden" having done "Next Plane To London". Linda was the lead singer for The Stone Poneys from 1964 to 1968 and theri only big hit during that time was "The beat Of A Diffewrent Drum". So, I stand corrected! It's always a good day when you learn something new! Thanks!

IN A BIG COUNTRY by Big Country!
IMHO one of the best songs ever. Written by the great Stuart Adamson.
Sadly, it was a one hit wonder in the US. Although they did have many hits in the UK. Big Country made seven exceptional studio albums and released many great singles throughout their career, and developed a very loyal following.

Spirit In The Sky by Norman Greenbaum. I'm not sure that truly counts, since he put out a few other singles, but that's the only one I hear. And how about Classical Gas by Mason Williams? -Rich
Edit: Oops, just read page one & iggy already had posted Spirit In The Sky. So, on the lines of Classical Gas, how about the Dueling Banjos and/or Tubular Bells? Also, does Sonny solo count? He once did a song without Cher - Laugh At Me. We did. Of course, he laughed all the way to the bank.
Patti Smith - Because the Night
Buffalo Springfield - "Stop Children, what's that sound?"
Eve Of Destruction - forgot the guys name.
If You're Going To San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair. Forgot his name, too.
Feeling Groovy - Harper's Bizarre? Something like that.
Who Will Answer - Ed Ames
McArthur Park (Someone left the cake out in the rain) - pretty surreal, can't remember the singer.

Also, "Baby Come Back" by Player. They did have one more song that scraped into the top 40. I have it on a KTel collection in my pile of records somewhere.
I would have thought though with their sound that they would have gone a lot further. That's one great, memorable song. And it is'nt irritating.

Some of the ones mentioned weren't actually one hit wonders.
Jerry Reed had another top ten pop hit in "Amos Moses" and several number one country hits.
David Houston could be considered a major country star with 24 top ten records. That's pretty good.
My most memorable one hit wonder was John Volinkaty. He was not a recording artist but a songwriter. He wrote the huge country hit "Satin Sheets" in the 70s. He moved to Nashville, was given a writing contract, and never had another hit. He left Nashville later on. He's made a lot of money on Satin Sheets, which was on a big Martina MacBride album of standards not too long ago. He also received partial writing credit for another Jeannie Pruett hit, "Play Satin Sheets Again."

"Jenny" by tommy tutone (867-5309) "total eclipse of the heart" by bonnie tylor? "centerfold" jgeils band "keep your hands to yourself" georgia sattlelites "the rainbow connection" kermit the frog
-steve Bonnie Tyler and J. Geils were definitely NOT one-hit wonders. Bonnie Tyler had her first hit with "It's A Heartache" several years before "Total Eclipse," and she had another hit afterward with "Holding Out For A Hero." Note that "Eclipse" and "Hero" were both written by Jim Steinman, the mad genius behind Meat Loaf's epics. J. Geils, perhaps, didn't hit #1 the way they did with "Centerfold," but they had other hits like "One Last Kiss," "Love Stinks," and "I Do."

Let's not forget - "Rock Me Amadeus" by Falco, which hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on March 29, 1986. Very much a one-off and quite a catchy little number! Falco is also often regarded as a one-hit wonder, although the follow-up "Vienna Calling" hit number ten.

Really don't know if these songs qualify as one hit wonders, but I do recall a few that I very rarely heard on the radio...
Shooting Star, "Summer Sun" (I think that's the title, either the title of the song, or the album it's on)
Touch, "Don't You Know What Love Is"
707, "I Could Be Good For You"

"Last Chance" was played on classic radio for years. And they were worthy of many more hits. Terribly commercially neglected band.

In a classic story of record company incompetence, Shooting Star had the number 1 album rock song on the radio in 1980 with "Last Chance" but their record company at the time failed to have any albums SHIPPED TO THE STORES!!!

We always find that some artists who were one-hit-wonders in the U.S. were Big Stars in the U.K. or elsewhere, (Cliff Richard, anyone?) and versey vicey.
Very true - It is strange for me here in the UK to see the likes of Frank Ifield and Gilbert O to be described as 'one hit wonders' - I just did a little check. Frank Ifield had 16 hits including 4 which reached #1. Gilbert O'Sullivan had 14 top 20 hits. There are many artists listed here as OHWs who have had stacks of hits in the UK e.g. Bonnie Tyler, Mungo Jerry, Dexys Midnight Runners, Gary Numan, Johnny Nash, Eddie Grant, Marmalade, Big Country, Nancy Sinatra, Aqua Winchester cathedral- something vaudville band?
It was the New Vaudeville Band - they were just a bunch of session musicians remember the group ANIMOTION? Yep! Obsession - great song! Pictures Of Matchstick Men - Status Quo You are kidding me!! They have had in excess of 50 hits! To Much to Dream - Electric Prunes
Now you are talking Interesting that Ace and Paul Carrack get mentioned as OHWs - it's the same guy!! Harper Valley PTA - Jeannie C Riley Breakfast At Tiffanys - Deep Blue Something Disco Duck - Rick Dees and his Cast of Idiots There is a myriad of one-off comedy hits Must stop now this is making my head hurt Cheers Nige

Ides of March is a Chicago band fronted by a guy who's been a friend of mine for almost 30 years, Jim Peterik.
The Ides had seeral chart records including Eye of the Tiger from one of the Rocky movies.
Jim has written hits for many other bands as well including "Hang on Loosely" for 38 Special.
A talented guy...but...the bum won't get ME a hit!

If I reall, The Ides Of March had the million selling single "Vehicle". I don't remember their songs. But I was always interested in bands out of Illinois such as Styx, Reo Speedwagon, and Chicago. I liked Survivor too. And lest not forget Cheap Trick.
Reo came out with a new album recently, and from what I heard it rocks like their seventies albums.

"You Have The Right To Remain Silent" by Perfect Stranger written by Cal and Brenda Sweat. Big hit on Curb Records in 1995.
I was the keyboard player for P. Stranger from 1996 - 1998 and can guarantee it was a one-hit wonder. Made it to #4 on billboard and was the 2nd most played song in 1995 behind an Alabama tune. :))

Larry,
Oh that's right. And I loved that song. And what a greta name for a group "Perfect Stranger". And the video was so perfect with the black and white and the shadowing effect that they used in much of it. Another terrific one. Since you were so close to them...any idea why nothing happened after that?
Thanks for another great reminder!

Al,
The group released a couple of more songs after "Right to Remain" but had no success. Then, a second album was financed by Curb but also with little success. Eventually, 2 of the 3 original members had to file bankruptcy unfortunately. After I left in 1998, they continued to tour but lost their deal with Curb and tried a few more things under an indie label. It wasn't until 2003 I believe that they finally disbanded. They are still located in East Texas and are dabling in music. I keep in touch regularly with the lead guitar player.
