Hi,
I'm looking for a publisher, if anyone could give me advice of finding a good one here in Australia, that would be great.
Due to not knowing enough about the music industry, I need to find a good publisher who can help me with advice, protect my interests, as I'm not very well educated, and I could be easily done over, so yeah, a Publisher who I can TRUST.
Thanks
Michele Bolton

Michele, you might contact this chap and ask him a few questions. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=138374851He's Australian. He was in Sweden for a while (it still says Sweden on his myspace page) but he's now back in Oz. At the very least he might be able to advise or point you to someone else who can. Good luck! Donna

My experience in the industry is with Publishers in the States who are signing music for film/tv... so what I'm about to say is based on that... but my publishers are not going to educate me about the business. That's not their job. Their job is to pitch my music & get it placed, thereby earning me (and them) money. For that work they receive all or part of the publishing royalties (depending on your deal) and (if film/tv placement) a share of the sync fees or (if record deal) mechanicals. This is my honest opinion -- you should not be looking for a publisher until you understand the industry and how it works. Because an uneducated songwriter is an easy target. How will you know if you can trust them if you don't know how things work, or whether what they are telling you is reasonable? I strongly recommend you read Jason Blume's "This Business of Music" and/or John Braheny's "The Craft and the Business of Songwriting". These are US-based books, but I think they would at least give you some basic understanding of the biz. Hope that helps Hummin'bird

Hi Hummingbird
The reason I am looking for a publisher who I can trust is yes, I don't know nothing about the industry, it totally confuses me, and as to reading a book, I can read, but what I read doesn't stay in my brain for very long, and I find it difficult to understand, and confusing.
I realize that a publisher isn't going to educate me, but I'm sure over time I will gradually learn, as I go through the process of hopefully getting my songs cut.
So thanks for letting me know about the books, and your advice I appreciate, cause I do worry about being taken advantage of, but one thing I can say, before this Aussie girl signs any paper work, I will be having it checked out, by my own legal solicitor.

Michelle...Vicki is giving you wise advice. The one thing about having those books on hand is......you do NOT have to read it all at once.... I would say that you have a much better understanding of the business since you started participating here at JPF than you would have prior to coming here....but there is a lot to learn....and I'd say some of us (self included) have only skimmed the surface. Read every column....every forum.....every post you have time to read here at JPF. Re-read them. I have to read and re-read to understand a lot of things....and some I still don't understand....but....I understand a lot more than when I started writing. Somethings we find out first hand...but that sure can be painful...especially if it's an after the fact. One of the subjects that's on the board in a great deal of detail.... is using a demo commercially do's and don'ts....and requiring a work for hire statement. That can save someone a lot of heart ache and worry later on. Having that John Braheny's book on hand will help you out as you look for a publisher......and continue growing. The index....narrows down subjects.....so let's say I was looking for information on copyright registration......or sharks......or ...publishing.....licensing...... I could look it up....and read that section. I may not understand everything I'm reading...but it gives me enough information to ask more questions. I've not read an entire book of anything songwriting yet....but I do look up things. Prior to signing anything....DO as you're mentioning and have it reviewed. There are shark publishers out there...gal who would like nothing better than to ask you for $. That's not how it works. best to you and hope you keep feeling better.... Kaley

Glad I caught this post! I posted a question about publishing a month or so ago and I got very little response. I will check these books out. Thanks!

I may not understand everything I'm reading...but it gives me enough information to ask more questions. This is great advice. All you need is to have a resource on hand. And you look it up when you don't know what to do. (Or come here and ask!) You'll remember it more when the specific situation applies to you. Use it as you go... Kristi
