This is my second year participating in this challenge. I definitely recommend it to other songwriters who want to become more prolific. There's a great group of participants and lots of opportunities for collaborations and games to keep the writing going! The website is http://5090.fawm.org/Intro blurb: Have you written 50 songs in 90 days? What are you waiting for... inspiration? "You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club." — Jack London This is the club. Each summer, 50/90 forges a collaborative community where musicians of all walks and skill levels write a slew of new music material in only three months. That's roughly one tune every other day. Participants are a mix of music professionals, students, homemakers, and folks who work day-jobs but rock nightclubs

Sure you will turn out more songs...but how many on the average are truly marketable?

I'm definately going for it. That's where I started in February this year. I was browsing the internet and ran across fawm in the last week. Wasn't hard to write 14 songs in a week. Sure they needed more work, and I had no idea what song structure was. Everything I've learned I've learned on this site since I found it middle of march, credit to the people here giving of their time.
I know I have miles to go, but I feel like I'm improving every day with more and more practice, and I will get that in the 50/90.
Marketable? That's not my goal, if I wrote something marketable that's a plus. I'm in it to become a better writer.

Sure you will turn out more songs...but how many on the average are truly marketable? it's a challenge to think outside the box, to get out of your comfort zone, to push yourself to be creative, to sketch up ideas quickly and move on, knowing you will come back later to shift through what you've done. Plus it's fun, and the community is awesome & inspiring. I can honestly say I'm a better writer, and more productive writer, because of doing Fawm/50.90. http://5090.fawm.org/fawmers/vikkiflawith/

Just the fact of having entered the challenge has already got me thinking outside the box! And the challenge hasn't even officially begun yet. I tend to be slow (taking a longish time to perfect lyrics), so I'll enjoy (I think ) forcing myself to see what I can come up with within every 48 hours or so. Knowing these first drafts will be polished up later is a relief. Donna

This is the first year for me to try this. The way I perceive it is it simply an excercise to get you writing...to create something new, musically. You are supposed to write 50 songs, if you can. If not, however many you can. You can then, at a later time, polish them, take them to the next level, trash them...whatever.
If you get but half a dozen "keepers", that's half a dozen you didn't have before. the idea of the FAWM is to get you writing...something, anything. Just get the idea on paper/on screen. You can develop it at anytime. But, you cannot develop what you do not start. This is to get you started. Very few of us write a song that is high quality the first time or two we scratch it out. It takes many rewrites in most cases. These FAWM songs are the same. Just get the general idea on paper. The idea comes now...the quality is developed from these ideas whenever you can get to it.
That's my perception of the FAWM. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Al,
Seems like a perfectly reasonable approach to me. However, don't be surprised if some really good tunes pop out!

Congratulations for any of you doing this. You will increase your abilities ten fold and go places you never thought you would. I wish you all great luck. Personally I have not tried to do that but ended up with quite a bit more.
My current totals are somewhere around 1263 songs in 4 years and 4 months. It is one of the main ways I "teach by doing."
Good luck to all of you.
