It has also known that a Label will recoup all the money advanced, and maybe then some before the Artist sees one thin dime. Ask the Dixie Chicks, who sold, I think 20 million albums and got nothing at that time. They baulked at recording anything else until they saw some money. Clint Black also said that he sold 20 million albums and didn't see anything.

I also heard that Clint Black sold 20 million cds and never received as much as a worthless thank you card.
I blame the artist manager and attorney for allowing the contractual obligation to be generated in the first place.
A good contract should have allowed the artist to collect at least one dollar for each of the cds sold.
