Several years ago I suscribed to STREOPHILE MAGAZINE. Included in the suscription was a Test CD. The CD has a test of 15 different microphones of which you can listen to. The Title of the test is WHY HI FI EXPERTS DISAGREE. As you listen you can hear the differences in each Mic as the text is read by Gordon Holt, a writer at the time. The differences are audable. To be able to select the perfect Mic would require a lot of testing to be sure. The best Mic for someone may not be the most expensive or the one with the best test results. A Mic can pick up each flaw in a voice that a lessor Mic would help Mask.
If I were going to purchase a Mic I would start with a good, but not overly expensive Mic and go from there.
Dynamic Mic's are generally for live performances and Condensor Mic's are generally for Studio use.
There appears to be mics designed for various applications such as vocal, instrument, drums, etc, etc, etc, of which may not work any better than another mike in a manufacture's line.
