In L.A., you won't find a competent musician who will play a 3-hour "cover" gig for less than about $125. That's no rehearsals - just show up and play - and that's the opening rate. Many want more.
In L.A., you will also find excellent musicians who will do a showcase for you for free or for gas money - if they like you and/or if you can swap some musical services with them (or paint their house - anything is fair barter).
It's a weird town....
Many singers and/or musicians will do a 2-3 hour demo session for $75, although some of the more experienced pros will want $100-125. Seasoned pro session players or singers will want $125-$200 and they'll have it all done in under an hour; some limit the time to 2 hours. Be well-prepared with lyric sheets, chord charts, and a good idea of what you want them to do.
Union rates are around $175 for a 3 hour session, plus cartage, plus any leader/contractor fees, etc.

"First came if only? Then came what if? After that I'll bet. Next was just maybe. Followed by Aha, I thought so! And eventually, okay, what next!" -Brian Austin Whitney on the stages of creativity and Just Plain Folks.
