I'd say it's always been about me for me.
Wanted to say I -used- to write for the audience, but when I really think about it... it's just used to be about me IN RELATION TO an audience. Now I'm pretty disinterested in what the audience thinks. (Though, my own standards are ridiculously high. I tend to think 90% or so of my original material is crap and it never sees the light of day, heh!)
For what it's worth, I started out as a cover song guy -- My PRIMARY motivation to start writing about fifteen years ago was an irritation at being compared to various original artists.
All hail the ego of a 20 year old musician. *laugh*

"First came if only? Then came what if? After that I'll bet. Next was just maybe. Followed by Aha, I thought so! And eventually, okay, what next!" -Brian Austin Whitney on the stages of creativity and Just Plain Folks.
