Old time Joe always loved a good time.
Old time Joe loved the Honky Tonks in town.
Kept the ladies out there on the dance floor,
their fellas in the corner all wearin' frowns.
Every night he'd wear out another pair of shoes.
When it came to dancin' he knew what to do.
He would never slow down not Joe not old time Joe.

Old time Joe could really work the Two-Step.
Old time Joe swept them ladies off their feet.
Had the moves that had the ladies scream out,
those same moves their fellas feelin' beat.
Once the music slowed down he'd grab another girl,
and when it picked up again he'd give her a twirl.
He could never slow down not Joe, not old time Joe.

That biab is pretty cool Doug

Nice and fun tune, for sure. The vocals are not "mixed in" as well as they need to be. It is a hard thing to get right, but you will over time. Have you watched any of those Recording Revolution's 5-minutes to a better mix yet?

It really is Louis and opening up a whole lot of inspirations.

Hi Kevin. Thanks for stopping by. Yes. I have been watching them and taking notes. [Floyd Jane is helping out a lot as well.]

Going to try something this weekend based on something Floyd said. He downloads his music tracks to an outside source and records his vocals there using regular microphones. Then uploads the vocal track back to his DAW for the mix.

I have a multi-track recorder, [Remember them those that recorded on cassettes?] and I am thinking of doing the same with that for my vocals.

Right now I am using a Samson G-Track USB Microphone and it is good but I feel that my vocals are missing something and maybe an ordinary mic will give me the richer/warmer tones I am looking for??

Will have to wait and see.

Some nice pick'n going on here! Try just a smidgen less reverb on your vox with this vibe of song as well--not sure, but I think it has a live sound with mix you have--which may be what you want too. Without a chorus, a short bridge might be cool as well, though I'm not sure if many Bluegrass songs use a bridge--many are chorus driven for sure. Experimentation is a great teacher, all of us would love to upgrade our equipment for sure which can always improve our productions. But like Kevin said above, there are some good videos out there for free to watch for assistance. Enjoyed your post!

I experimented around for a while with USB mics and finally went back to my trusty old Rode NT1 and interfaced it to my Mac with an el cheapo but effective Blue Icicle. Works like a champ on Janice's voice. I like what you're doing. All of our productions (with the exception of <10 that have friends playing lead) are complete BIAB instrumentation. It has allowed Janice to explore new genres and has given me a perspective on mixing I never thought I would have. Floyd has been very helpful with advice on my mixes and he introduced me to a lot of great mastering techniques.

BTW, Janice and I played in several traditional bluegrass bands over the last three decades and we never encountered a bridge!

Right now as the learning curve grows I am writing them as I hear them when playing along with Band In The Boxes "Real Tracks."

Hello J & B.

I hear you. BIAB has been a great tool and has opened me up musically in ways I had not thought of. [Working on a blues number, and one where my vocal range is being tested.]

Believe that eventually I am going to have to get more real tracks but for now think I have more then enough.

Tomorrow I am going to use my digital recorder as my audio interface, if it will work the way I 'see' it, and plug in my regular microphone. I am hoping I can do this and not have to buy an audio interface.

Either way learning as I go.

Some great swing/blue grass style going on. The music moves really well....the vocals, as already been noted, should be better mixed in the tune. Other than that.....I love this!

When I saw BIAB, I clicked on to give a listen. I’ve done 6 CD’s with me playing and doing all the instruments, and then I discovered BIAB. Great tool, especially for drums which I really don’t play all that well. Bass is pretty basic so I usually mute the one in BIAB and play my own.

Not much to add to what the others have said. I would definitely recommend exporting each BIAB instrument to a wav file then mix using programs like Audacity. Do the same with your vocals. That way you’ve got better control over each instrument and once you get it under your belt can start moving parts of wavs around, copy/paste, etc. I’m finding I spend more time on mixing and post production than I do on the actual recording.

Since real blue grass is pretty raw, I would agree with the others to cut back on the reverb on the vox. They didn’t have mics and amps in them old barns.
