That is what I took from the Shania Twain interview https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PDNNQznU3uc&list=UUPQ1nqIgM_yUiQVJBg_RR6Qhttp://tasteofcountry.com/shania-twain-women-risk-takers/and she isn't wrong. Of course we're supposed to consider these male artists as strong men but in their songs they don't talk about women. It's girl this and girl that. Also she points out that men get away with more which is likely true. Consider the blowback LBT has received for Girl Crush and Kacey Musgraves got for Follow Your Arrow and Dixie Chicks got for the GWB situation. I'm sure I could find more examples. You can record a song about a honkytonk badonkadonk and it be played everywhere even though it's incredibly sexist but the words girl crush entails the gay agenda and gets blackballed. You can find problems in every genre though but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be addressed. Nor should the songs be boycotted. Hopefully the next trend or wave is women and girl power. Have had enough of these macho men who have nothing important to say

That is why I listen exclusively to Rap and Hip Hop -- those genres are extremely respectful of women.

I did say you can find problems in any genre. Yes. I believe that genre rap & hip hop is the worst for not respecting women. It's not even close to the other genres.

Aw Gee, Having listened to Country Music and other kinds since about 1950 there have been few ladies in country or perhaps other genres as well. However over the last 20 years or so it is the ladies that have made the best music, in my opinion!
Check out Connie Francis and Gogi Grant. Also Peggy Lee.

I agree. Female artists in (country and pop) are more interesting than their male compatriots and put out better music.
Although I am a big fan of female punk bands too.

Aaron, what do you want to achieve from this site? Do you just want a place to rant? Do you want to start debates that in the end do no one any good? It appears that way to me.
I've remained silent to some of the most idiotic discussions you and others have started here in the last couple of weeks, but have to call you out now. I can't speak for Brian or any of the moderators here, but this negativity has to stop. Life isn't fair Aaron, so grow up and get over it.
Some years ago we had a political thread at JPF. I came close to losing some valuable friends because angers flared. I had time to rethink things that I say online and decided to keep my ideology to myself and to concentrate on the music and ways to improve as a musician and a songwriter.
Why can't you add something positive? I don't have to read the rants that you and your friends post, but I've put a few hours on this site, and I shouldn't have have to pick out what I think is appropriate to read.

Hey BEN you have to be kidding. NOW YOU want to censor a discussion so YOU are part of the problem. Don't like a song turn on another channel....Don't like a thread here move on to another. I find conversations like this very instructive and interesting and NOT Negative. Points of view are AMERICAN and Conversation going respectively back and forth don't have to be mean spirited at all and if people opened up their ears more maybe occasionally may learn something. What's wrong with a stimulating conversation of give and take. GEEZE...Aaron keep posting as you are right on.

Not a suprise that people want to censor my opinions. Ben made Shanias point for me. I suppose the thread could end now victorious.

Girl in a country song by Maddie and Tae was a number 1 hit and it deals with this exact topic. Check it out https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_MOavH-EivwSo while Ben might find this topic irrelevant or negative, female recording artists think it's important.

That is why I listen exclusively to Rap and Hip Hop -- those genres are extremely respectful of women. Kinda lame just to point your finger elsewhere, and say they do it too. Especially since Beyonce sits at the top of the black music scene and projects a strong, in control image. Also there has been blowback against the sexism of early rap and hip hop. These are relatively new genres compared to country music and it's a much less controlled path to the airwaves there. Country music is the last I believe of the corporate controlled music genres in the way artists are developed and presented. Pop just wants to control distribution and is less concerned about content. That said I think there are plenty of socially conscious artists like Garth Brooks and Tim McGraw among many others. But strong women who want artistic control are increasingly going to go the indie route which will lessen the reach of the Nashville system as generations pass.

kinda lame to point out that I was kinda lame. If you want to make a point, do it -- you don't need to cut down my viewpoint when making your own.

I am reminded of Kelly Clarksons battle with her label. She wanted more say in the songs she cut and control of her career and at that point she more than earned it. She wasn't given the same leeway and freedom the male artists were given.
People like to brush it off and try to change the topic but it's definitely still a problem at a time when gender equality should be closer.

I don't have to speak for Ben, but I will (ha, ha). I think Ben is all for open discussions, but it is just odd when one or two people become the cheerleaders for all things that are controversial. Seems like time would be better spent writing songs, posting songs and commenting on other's tunes.
However, Brian seems to like to run an open shop, but I think seeking balance is always a good principle.

Okay Kevin my two threads are about music and are relevant, current event topics.
Shanias interview and LBT Girl Crush - all over the newswire.
This is a forum about music, right?
I comment on JPF members songs and lyrics and I have every right to make a thread about music whatever it is.

Okay Kevin my two threads are about music and are relevant, current event topics. ... If you don't think you are being overly negative and not being controversial for the sake of being controversial, then that is good enough for me. Just pointing out that it might seem the opposite to others involved. There is nothing wrong with the two current threads that you mentioned above.

I didn't want to "go there" but it seems like a lot of people on this forum are right wingers and so when politics mixes with music the right wingers try to shut it down.

I didn't want to "go there"... you went there (ha, ha). Which means you wanted to go there. By the way, your thread title "Country music dominated by bros who don't respect women" is a sexist-baiting title that is not supported by the video or the article (yes, Shania said country music is "dominated by men", but not the rest of it). When you have a title that is 100% opinion that seems to be a hyperbole of the underlying articles, then you should expect to be called out on it.

OK, maybe we have gone too far off-topic (myself included), maybe getting back to the topic at hand is a good idea.

You call it hyperbole, female recording artists wrote a number 1 song about it.
http://www.macleans.ca/i/?ap=http%3A//www.macleans.ca/culture/shania-twain-in-conversation-im-not-25-i-want-to-love-where-im-going-but-its-a-challenge/&ac=MME&aa=%2Frogers.publishing%2FMacleans.CPGBusiness&at=10
This is from the Shania interview
Q: Many critics say that today’s country music is missing its rebels. Not bad boys—of which there is a surplus—but women who speak their mind through lyrics. It’s all about “bro country” right now—so many high-profile male soloists are writing hits about about women that still refer to them as “girl” in their lyrics.
A: Balance is important. Whenever it goes too far in one direction, it just gets boring. It’s very dominated by men right now. A lot of people are saying this to me as encouragement. We don’t have enough women. Maybe it’s more romance that country is missing right now. Women have a lot to say but it takes a lot of courage to say it. Women are the greater risk-takers. When they step out of what’s expected in this genre, they are really stepping in the line of fire.
Shania is saying when women step out of their roles and take risks they are risking their career. Wonder why? It's basically what Kacey Musgraves has said and Miranda Lambert and other women. LBT is feeling it currently as is Musgraves. Lambert managed to change her image enough to where she is the new darling of Nashville. No longer the outcast that wants to shoot men.
You can try to change the topic by making it about the messenger Kevin but it won't work.
