Yes. nice. always great to see Japov in the game, spirited lad that he is.
John's piano is always spectacular as well.

You and I craig, just need to add more melody lines with our limited resources to bring the guessing into the relm of possible.

I like the research though. I'm working on one. I'll eventually bring it.

Okay, here’s Metallica’s version.

Thanks! I didn't capture enough of the original I don't think.
Clues: Its a folk song 200-300 years old...who is the oldest JPF person here? hmmm yeah ...no. Origin unknown. maybe the Mackin clan 1888 Ireland immigrant. If it shows up a clone on SUNO...maybe no $150,000 owed.
Other clues:

First appearance on TV in 1963 for this folk artist, who sang a version.

No wonder I'm having difficulty with this tune...I was reviewing some of the songs I learned in the 1500's..I didn't realize you are only going back 200-300 years...that makes it much easier, Bill..thanks for the clue...I should be able to figure it out in about...hmmm..six months..LOLOL

No woops.....I did find this on the bottom of the lyric : Copyright © 1962; renewed 1990 by MCA

this folk artist did his own write, used some of the original words, maybe his tune as well?
the TV appearance was his first...but not national. it was WBC-TV in New York.

He hangs on the first note, 5 chord high lonesome sound. Then he touches on the 1 for an instant and swoops back up to the 4. like a firken roller coaster ride of emotion, bfore taking the listener home to the 1....then whoosh off on another swoop. At the end he bounces like a bell on the 2 and 4 , A and D open strings, like threat to change keys, creating suspence.
I've been trying for 50 years to duplicate that, failing...lol.

Here’s an easy scramble...name the song, singer/songwriter and the city in the song

The letters are scrambled...each letter is the first letter for each word in the title or the first letter in the singer/songwriter’s name and the first letter of the name of the city

Steve
