Here's a piano track that uses melody notes of Phoebe's "Smelly Cat" song on Friends. Phoebe, actress Lisa Kudrow, said it was originally for her dog. Anyway, I used the notes on "Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat" which were BBB- BAA-. Then I developed my own work from there. Decided to title the album "For Love of Phoebe".

Decided to delete these versions. I redid all of them.

Best, John

This is a beautiful melody. Man, you used a lot of chords. I enjoyed listening. Very relaxing.

I can't hear it well; my laptop sound sucks.
But I hear the 'inspiration' from "Smelly Cat" but quickly hear you craft it as something else.
"Phoebe" had a 'body of work' on "Friends", "Sticky Shoes", and others.
"Friends" were my 'friends' for ten years, a delight to see and hear them be themselves.
They 'became' themselves over time. Binge watching you see characters blossom, 'Phoebe', for example, becoming the 'floopy' doofus whose philosophies were generally sound.
You can see her grow the character from the early episodes, soon in later episodes to a level of completeness she then played on for the decade of the work ahead.
Love the Title, "For The Love Of Phoebe". It can endure as an instrumental composition, under that Title.

There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

Thanks Gary! Yes, watching Friends is a temporary escape from the turmoil around us. Phoebe is my favorite, but all 6 characters do a great job. I doubt I'd ever come across any of them in real life. laugh

This made me smile, John.

I'm sure some of the Friends cast and crew might get a kick out of this as well. :-)

Well done, sir.

Peace,

Dave

Thanks Dave! I'm considering doing a piano lounge album of Phoebe songs. She's done 56 all together on Friends. I'd be able to have a month of fun! I think I'll start with "Crusty Old Man" or "Sticky Feet".

Yes, I'm sure you're right about the recognition. But this piano track only exists because of this short song by Phoebe. I used her first couple measures to develop my music for this.

Sticky Shoes Prelude: http://schicksville.com/Sticky%20Shoes%20Prelude.mp3

I had more leeway with this Phoebe song. She sang it acapella. No guitar chords.

Her singing of that is enticing. Great that you have captured and extended it.

If it were to become a hit, with your rendition, how would the royalties work?

First, I don't think there would be a copyright issue. They're too different. That being said, I did send an email to Lisa Kudrow's publicity agent. I doubt this would become a hit.

Thanks, John

The Prosody bit in her piece. Parody. Comedic. Like a torch song. Funny Valentine. Sticky shoes? lol.

But your rendition. Those chords…recognizes something…completes it.

Maybe it’s just a musician thing…but I want to grab my guitar and find those notes.

Makes sense to me to send this to her publicity agent as your version and "homage" is of potential PR value and it IS a beautiful piece of music...and as you say different enough not to be a problem and close oenough to be inspired by it

Also reflection of what makes you a professional who makes their living in music. Taking care of business

OMG! YES!!

You could title your album "PB & J" (Phoebe Buffay and John) :-)

Good stuff here, sir!

Peace,

Just added #4 in the top page. Titled "Suicide and a Snowman Appassionata". I'll have to search through Phoebe songs for #5 tomorrow.

Phoebe's songs were purposely bad. I've never tried to purposely compose horrible music. It would be a challenge.

Annual Earnings: Like the other five lead cast members, Kudrow reportedly earns approximately $20 million per year in residuals from Friends.

Negotiated Share: This income stems from a landmark deal the cast made in 2004, granting each of them 2% of the show's syndication profits.

Ownership of the Songs: While Kudrow helped compose melodies, the lyrics were written by show staff, and the rights to the songs typically belong to the production company, Warner Bros.

20 mil a year for some stupid show 20 years ago , Not bad

The "Main Four" Deals: The primary cast (Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards) all continue to benefit from the show's massive, ongoing popularity, which generates roughly $1 billion per year for Warner Bros.

Amazing Ben! Well, no one ever said this is a value for value world. Yes, "Friends" play on TV 7 days a week and many times a day.
