Then she smiles and says, "what an ass" We've had our storms, slammed a few doors Made up slow on hardwood floors Raised some kids, watched them leave Now it's just her and me She rolls her eyes when I joke too much Still reaches out when we touch Love ain't perfect. love ain't fast But somehow, yeah, it lasts Lines on our faces now Still laugh the same somehow Married for thirty-eight years Yeah, I've still got it---or so it appears Every time I pass by my wife I hear her mumble under her breath "Lord, he don't ever change, does he?" Then she smirks and says, "what an ass" If that's the worst thing she can say After all these years, I'm okay 'Cause she's still here, right by my side Still my girl still my ride Married for thirty-eight years Through all the laughter and the tears Every time I pass by my wife She pretends I'm the bane of her life But she grabs my hand when I walk past And whispers low... "my kind of ass"

You only use it once so that heavy "through the laugter and tears" cliche is OK
Maybe reveal the secret sauce...even cryptically?

I like this. This is good. Really good. My wife and I have only been married for 35 years so I can't fully relate to this yet.
