While Yesterday's Still Young

Johnny hopped off a train in Macon
with just half a can of Copenhagen
and a camping shovel in his pack
got a window seat at Denny's
paid for his coffee with pennies
and stared at the oak tree across the tracks

time had passed but he still loved Patty
too bad the sheriff was her daddy
three years back he ran Johnny out of town
he hated his streetwise way of livin'
thought Johnny robbed that 7-11
though the mask and money were never found

Johnny wrote a letter on the tablemat
he'd changed but should he have come back
cos there are things that should be done
while yesterday's still young

the smoke shops and bars were mostly closed down
that side of the tracks was like a ghost town
as Johnny walked away from that oak
he was wiser now and didn't care if
his sweetheart's father was the sheriff
he just hoped Patty found his note

she met him at the depot just before twelve
he bought two tickets with some wrinkled bills
their kiss began in the dark backseat
as that Greyhound faded down the street

four foot hole by that big oak tree
that sheriff knew his girl had broke free
and regrets hit the hardest when they come
while yesterday's still young
