Gotta tell you, Brian. As far as retrieving old posts, this is a big step backwards. It takes FAR too long trying to locate something by date, if you don't recall the title, as you have to sit there forever clicking a mere 2 pages at a time. Further, all posts prior to April, '05 truly are vanished. Bummer.....

Ben yesterday Brian changed the edit feature so you can edit beyond 360 hours. If you were trying to change your initial post with the lyric, it was probably older than 360 hours. I think that's why the edit button wasn't showing up for you when you wanted it. Sound reasonable??
Good day, Vanessa

Ben,
You seem determined to find negativity on the new boards. I don't think there's anything missing on Lyric 3. All the post seems to be there. The quantity is correct. Are you sure it supposed to go before 2005? If so, give me an example of a post and date that is missing? Since you didn't join until 2005, not sure what you're looking for? Lyric 2 goes back to 2002 and Lyric 1 goes back to day one. The posts you want pre-April 2005 are on one of the other 2 lyric boards.

Brian, I'm not DETERMINED to find negativity, and I frankly resent hearing that, as though I've run off a litany of different problems. I've basically said the same thing, trying to get an answer. And I DO think it's a step back to only be able to go through pages at a snail's pace. If there's a quick way to get to page 45, please let me know. As to the earlier lyrics being on the other boards, that isn't something one would just innately know. I think you touched on something VERY favorable to my position. It's true, all of my lyrics are post-April, 2005, ergo, it speaks to the fact I was concerned for my brethren, who've been here longer than I. I specifically thought of Dawg, thinking all of his were gone. Ben

Ben, Now there is something to work with. Don't recall Dawg posting on board two and it came into existence shortly after I came here. If you know that you want to find something of Dawg's , search board one with Dawg in the topic starter field and your tribbles should be few. Pete

Well, just to try to learn how this is working....I got this email at 5:30 Central: You have received a private message at Just Plain Folks Music Organization Message Boards. You can go to http://www.jpfolks.com/forum/ubbthreads.php to view it. Went there, but I didn't see anythins specifically for me. I've never learned anything more than the rudiments of this computer gig. I got it, at someone's urging, to write and I use it very little beyond that. And this is the FIRST notification I've ever had. I've never been set up to be notified regarding responses to topics....so I don't know what the email concerns.

Ben,
You need to click under "My stuff" when logged in and you can view your private messages. The notification is just so you know you have a message from another user.

Ben,
I am sorry if you're pissed off at me somehow. But the boards are definitely NOT a step backwards. They are totally amazing. I just can't understand why you seem totally pissed off by everything. I know learning the new board isn't easy for everyone and that includes me. I still don't know how half of it works yet. But I am pretty sure all the same posts that were on the old board are on this board. None of that has changed.
There's a much better search function on this board as well (check advanced). Right now it is set to only search back 1 year because most sites don't save all posts like we do. Our use of this board is very unusual and very heavy. It's become a creative archive. Most boards automatically prune posts that are a year old (or in some cases months old) and don't save them because of server space and bandwidth of old posts coming up in search engines. Also, searching a half million posts is very slow and hard on the servers with as much traffic as we get. (Heck, we haven't had less than 300 people on the boards at one time since we re-launched them).
So the posts are all here. As for looking for posts buried, yes, I see it's harder to get to "page 45" but most people don't remember what is on page 45 in the first place. They would usually use the search feature to find something that is that old. Plus, page 45 isn't stagnant. Tomorrow it will be page 46 then 47 etc. The board is what it is. I can't change the scroll feature. It's set that way simply because most people didn't want the links to all the page displayed. I can ask the makers of the board if there's a way to change it, but for most folks, it won't be an issue. They'll use the search feature anyway because they won't know what page something is on.
All of Dawgs posts are on Lyric 1 and 2.

Brian. I'll let the first part of your response slide, as I have never intimated that you have some sort of vendetta with me, and if I fit the sob you describe, I must be one overwrought dude. And my only "upsetness" with you stems from that one comment, implying that I'm determined to find something to gripe about. I acknowledge & appreciate what you've created here. BY THE WAY, for those who might read this, I actually wrote a heartfelt lyric praising Brian and this very site. I've no idea if you saw it, Brian, since you never responded, but it's a perfect case-in-point. I don't have a clue what the title was, nor have I seen it since the day it left page one of this board. I could take a guess about the post date, but unless it was late or early on this board (which it wasn't), it would be a ..... to find. Thanks, at least, for acknowledging that it is a task to reach posts somewhere in the middle. I mentioned page 45 simply because it IS in the middle of this board. I don't have ANY idea if changes can be implemented without major headaches. One quick example of something I think would be great to see modified....it's tuff to find one's own posts. If it's possible, now that your name is below the title of your post, I think it would make it much easier to locate a certain post if there was a color difference. In the past, when looking for one of my lyrics, I've guessed at the post date, and scrolled down looking for Ben F, which is far easier than trying to read a title that you don't know to begin with. Some way of making the poster's name stand out under their lyric would help, I think. BUT, that's no biggie. Just food for thought if it's doable, without major upheaval. Far as I know, this is the best site of it's kind, and you should be proud. I may be remiss in not saying so...sorta like Daddy used to get on me occasionally for not being effusive in my praise of Mama's cooking. I'd respond, "C'mon, Daddy, I ate THREE plates and ummed & ahhed the whole time." Despite a few unpleasant moments, the same holds true here, and what the heck kind of family doesn't squabble from time to time? Better shush before I write something regrettable, if I haven't already. Ben

Ben,
Did you try the advanced search? Put your name in and your last 200 posts pop right up. Just that easy.

I just did a search for Ben F and found all 4012 of your posts in 5.43 seconds in order by date. To me, that's a lot better than clunking around page by page.

Brian, Folks are forever posting sugs of refference material and it gets hard remembering where you were when you heard about a certain book or other ref. , Think we could have a reading room , or , a ref. sect of reader reccomended books etc. so folks like me don't get lost? Pete

Pete,
Do you think it would be active enough to maintain? And also, do you want to moderate it if we did it??

Hi Brian,
I know it's a huge undertaking that you just completed with the changes to this forum. Big kudos to you!
I noticed that when I edit my reply to someone, it offers me the choice of having that edit date show up as a footnote on the bottom, or having it appear as though the edit was part of the original post, with no one knowing that I ever went in an edited my response.
In the past, that edit footnote was automatic, and I thought that that was a perfect and very smart feature. If I reply to someone, and that person then edits the original message that prompted my response...things could get very confusing, especially during a controversial or heated forum discussion. With the old, automatic edit notification, everyone could at least see if a post had been edited after a reply had been posted.
Hope I'm making sense!
Thanks for listening...
Lisa

Brian , I'm not sure what constitutes active enough . We have links to other sites and I have no idea how active they are. I'd say once in two weeks someone reccomends a book . My memory on that one may not be real accurate , but ; that's on the lyric board . I'm thinking that theory , instruments and engineering would have their ref's as well. Yes , I'd pitch in , do my part and try to make it usefull and usable. Pete

Hi Lisa
controversy not withstanding, I kinda like it that everytime I correct a spelling error, the whole world doesn't have to know about it....and even with the edit shown, one still has to prove exactly what was edited.
Ben, an easy way to find your posts is to click on your name in any post you have made, this will take you to your profile, and then click, all posts by this user. The old forum had the same thing, but it was limited to 200 posts, with this new one all posts means all posts! Also it's really all posts not just titles, but it's in the old format where the posters name is seperate from the title of the piece.
Brian...Great Job, a million Kudos to You!

Hi Ritt,
I know what you mean about the convenience of it. But I had also been thinking that the automatic edit is a safety feature. While it's highly unlikely, I know...I was thinking that someone could, at a much later date, edit their original response and claim that they gave a songwriter something that they didn't actually give him. Even if the writer had a printout of the original discussion, it wouldn't do him any good. Since there is no date verification on it, it would be his copy of the post against the other person's copy of the post.
Now, it would be nice to be able to edit your own lyric without the edit feature appearing. That way, you could fix typos, etc. without the whole world knowing. (Actually, I've just come back in here...if there were no automatic edit notification on the bottom of a lyric, I suppose that that could be fraught with corruption options too.)
Lisa

Hi Lisa , Pet peeve of mine , is that , you post a comment , the lyric gets changed five times by the end of the thread and you aren't alone , if you start reading the thread from beginning to end , most of the comments will be about stuff that isn't there any more. That's stuff that happens by accident ! If someone would edit stuff to weassle out of something they said , well , you get the picture... Pete

I was originally going to cut this back to 1 Lyric board but based on the explosive traffic the site has and the fact that we've almost filled up 50 posts on Lyric 3 today, I don't think we'll be consolidating. I'd much rather have 3 active boards anyway.. so if you guys keep the traffic up, we'll leave all 3 boards active.
