Have been running a bit of a comparison between two music sites, soundclick.com and iacmusic.com Both have no advertising on my part, and both have the same 10 songs on each respective page. So far, this month the stats are....

Soundclick.com 50 plays, zero downloads

iacmusic.com 2781 plays , zero downloads.

Does anyone have any more stats they's like to add, either from these 2 sites or any others ? There's quite a remarkable difference, I have no idea why. So if you have some stats you'd like to add, please do, I'd be interested in if, and where people are listening.

Note ; Just statistics would be fine. Comments which could be considerd defamatory to companies or individuals are probably best left out.

That's a huge difference! Do you have any explanation as to why you have so many more listens on iacmusic.com? I have never checked iacmusic out, but maybe I should if it is a vibrant musical community.

No, I've got no idea mate, i don't work for them, promote them or have any external advertising, so it is a mystery. It does seem to be vibrant, and indie orientated, yet there are the big guys like Van Morrison, Pete Townsend and others there. When it comes time to throw some advertising dollars around ( if ever ! ) I'd just like to know where my money is best spent, so am wondering what is the experience of others ?

Where I am on dialup,I find soundclick more convenient to listen to.I can stream on lofi fairly quickly,I don't have that option at IAC.

That is a good point Everett, the lo fi option is available to quickly scan songs, a feature which iac doen't have.

Those are interesting stats.
I went to Google and tried searching for music using several different search terms and IACmusic and soundclick never showed up on the first page. Makes me wonder how people even find them.

One stat I did see was iacmusic lists how many users are currently online. It showed 18,650 users online. Soundclick does not show that statistic. It would be nice if they did so we could compare.

I might have to see about signing up. I get about 300 plays a month on soundclick, 270 this month.
I do not do any advertising or promotion. except for the ocasional song post here on JPF.
I wonder what I would get on iacmusic?

I am only familiar with Soundclick. I get a handful of clicks per day and few of the clickers actually listen to the songs and none have ever been downloaded.

Assuming my songs are not atrocious, I think that Soundclick is heavily populated by rappers and hip hop artists who post and download "beats". This is evident if you look at the bulletin board traffic.

My songs are 180 degrees away from rap.

Yes, the "users online " seems to vary greatly, from about 5,000 at it's lowset to around 50,000 depending on the time of day. Soundclick doesn't publish those stats, so will have to give that comparison a miss.

Anyone use any other sites ?

Colin , you reckon it's a genre thing then ? As in the listeners, at one , prefer a type of music which is abundant to a particular site ? Therefor self perpetuating ? Or if you're on the other side of the spectrum, just digging a hole.

I have over thirty songs on soundlick but the plays are mostly generated by about ten songs. A lot of my songs are like work tapes and not very good. I don't know why I even leave them there, LOL. Some of those are on stations so I guess they get played more.

I also have a VIP account and one song gets played when you click on the main page. It's kinda misleading in that sense. But then again something brings folks to my page. I don't know what.

I think Genre may have something to do with how many folks visit a site but not where they go when they get there. It is unlikely a rapper would visit the country charts.
Some of the hip hop and beats artists on soundclick have a couple million plays so you might be right about it being a mostly hip hop site.

Yeah, kind of the same Bill, of the ten songs, 3 generate, about 60% of the song plays, the rest divided evenly for the others. Funnily enough, I have one fan ( must be the same guy, because the song is so obscure ) who drops by every day and plays only that one song. There's no accounting for taste, but it's cool to have a diehard fan !

You guys got me interested in iacmusic, so I went and looked. Other than that godawful color scheme... the only downside I see is that you can only have two songs up if you go with the free account. I assume you can can switch them out, but I'm not sure about that.

Hey Lyle, yep the front page colour scheme is a real doozy huh ? But at least you can tone it down for your homepage.

I gvet about 2.500 visits, 7-800 listens, and a very varied download rate on soundclick.
I do have 26 radios playng my songs, there so that probably jacks the streams up.
I used to have more downloads than streams for many years, but that has reversed now.
Given I am only a writer and don't sing pretty, I am very happy with that number.
I don't promote them at all, although putting up a few for critique on MP3 forum has swelled the numbers a little I believe.
I have quit trying to maintain a swag of sites, and stick with two.
Soundclick, because it is bottonless, and free, and i know from feedback, some industry names do wander there sometimes, and SongRamp, I keep a site open for the Private Listening Room threy give away, and because, in my years as a Moderator there i made a lot of aquaonances I like to keep in touch with, and i have some good collabs originating from there.
I get a very varied number of plays , downloads, and comments there, and being a freebie now, can't see the numbers breakdown.
I tried MySpace and found it too clumsy and too much BS.
AcidPlanet, i d0tried but don't like the terms of service wording.
MP3dot com AU, I also found slow and quit that as well.
Seems to be full Other than Australians hoping to strike less competition in the colonies these days.
Exactly the wrong move when looking for worthwhile exposure I am sure.

Thanks Graham, would agree with mp3.com.au, which I also qiut, and Myspace I don't even bother about, too many graphics, and far too many punters on the one site, to be able to break through. Good to see you're getting some plays with soundclick. Wonder what I'm doing wrong ?

Don't know Cobber, burt whatever it is, it can't be anything I am doing right because about the only thing I do anywhere near right is write.
I do have over 300 songs up there, and usaully knock out a couple at least a week, so I am in the new list a lot i suppose.

I get between 500 and 1000+ plays per month at soundclick. That number is dependant on how many new jams I put up each month. If it is new, then folks here or at the fender forum will listen to it. My older songs get some plays (they are part of radio stations), but for the most part, I just get listeners to tune in to just the newest songs.

Hey Kevin, keep us posted with the monthly stats. I think the key to soundclick may be putting up new work and hence attracating new listeners. I'm not a very prolific writer, so have probably drifted off into the backwaters. Either that, or I just suck !

I believe the being seen thing to be a pretty big thing on any site Shifty.
When I was moderating on SongRamp, I didn't have time to do much at any other site, and i noticed Soundclick was withering, but it didn't take long to get back in the limelight some.
I am pretty sure they are going to put a Play all new uploads facility up soon, which is better for my purposes than charts play all, as the charts can be manipulated eassily so certain songs are always in the top 100, so keeping the honest songs out.

Yeah, that's pretty much the case Graham. I'm not interested in chart rankings, because they are easily manipulated. Just raw song plays means that there are the general public who like your tunes and want to play them.

I did try Songramp, but found it was more for musicians, rather than the general public. I got a "not really interested" signal, so didn't bother any more.

As one who writes "weird" non commercial stuff, I think I'm finding where my music suits, and where it doesn't. All horses for courses I reckon.

The big thing I liked about Songramp when I first found it was that it was not only a musician site, but a writer's site too, and me being more of the latter than the former, I felt right at home.
It doesn't have that same feel any more, so I have gone back to using soundclick as my main place, only dropping the occassional song on the ramp and checking out the artists I know and like.
I see it as a shame because The ramp was really looking like a home for the not all that wonderful performing writers.

Graham, yeah it's kind of a shame when you put a lot of work into something, and for one reason or another it just doesn't work out. But that's life, you gotta use the tools which are of most benefit.

Yep. But One thing dying often leads to another one being born, so I am sure I will survive.
It is going to be interesting to see what the clicks on my site do over the next few days actually.
A drummer I know asked if i could make up some drumless bed tracks for him as there are not many of them about for drummers to thrash around to for practice.
His missus who is a poet also asked me if I could look at some of her work and see if i could put music to it, so this morning was spent de drumming some bed trascks and recording them, and I trotted over to their place after lunch.
We had a bit of a jam just him on drums and me on harmonica and that was fun, then i fired up the beds and sat back while he had a great time, and read his lady's poems while that was going on.
I put one aside, and when he got to a piece I knew was in there , I got up and sung the poem along with him.
They were hapy campers i tell you.
Then I downloaded the free soundtrek jammer trial for them and showed them how to get started using it, and left.
The biggest smiles on dials i have seen in a long time.
Knowing the program, I was able to hit on the style straight away, and hit compose, and simply sing along.
I bet the dishes waont get done as often in that house for a little while now.

Depending if its a slow month or not.. I get somewhere around 600 hits.. 80 plays and 5 downloads a month at soundclick... I have I think 8 or 10 songs on some soundclick stations... funily enough one of the most popular downloads is a recital of one of my ballads...

Funnily enough, every now and then, I see my Vocal range post is up on the charts.
Considering it is only doe rae me from E below middle C to C two above middle C, I wonder how many clicks it need s to jump into the charts.

I joined IAC a few days ago and I uploaded "There's A Drought Going On". I played it a couple of times to make sure everything was OK and it has been added to a few stations. However, I am getting no activity showing up in the Monthly Plays section. Do you have to have a premium account to have the plays show up?

Hey Kevin, there does seem to be an anomaly in the updating of the stats. I think it's meant to happen every day, but is seems like every 3-4 days. Let us know how you go.

Yep, I get a similar page hit count, then the song plays dwindle, and since I tried paid downloads as an experiment, zero. I just wonder where these page hits are coming from when virtually no-one is playing the songs. Strange . . .

Colin - see you've got a station up and happening as well. ( and thanks for the add ) Have you tried to embed the player on another site ? I don't know about these things, as I don't have a site to embed it upon in the first place . LOL , but would be interested in if it is worthwhile.

I guess these measurements aren't really apples to apples, since these tunes probably won't get much airplay anymore on soundclick, but here goes:

For all of 2007, I had 122 plays on There's a Drought Going on. In a couple of days at IAC, there have been 48 plays. We will have to see if any listens continue. I just wonder what overall effect the IAC radio stations have?

Yeah, I think it's got mainly to do with how many stations pick it up. Sort of like playlists by democracy. Good songs = good stations, which more people will listen to. Sort of self perpetuating.

I show about 20 plays on each song I posted in the first couple of days. It has not increased and I don't know if there are zero plays or if there is a lag between updates.

I like the IAC site. I noticed that Soundclick is going to revise the look very soon.

Never tried the IAC, will have to set it up and have a go at it...as far as my other sites, I get a couple hundred hits a month on my cdbaby site, about 300 a month on myspace and a little over 2000 a month on my soundclick. I'm fairly new at this site stuff, just set them all up this year, but that's what it is at this point. I don't know if I'm wrong or right but I've made a decision to do paid downloads on anything I've released (I get a few, but not alot, and it's because I don't tour and am mainly in pursuit of this whole thing as a writer)and streaming only on anything I haven't released. If someone, say a publisher(which has usually been the case) needs a freebie, I'll be the one to send it to them. Thanks for the tips on IAC, didn't know it even existed. See ya , Moker

Clicks? I was hopin' we was talking about how many *chicks* we got from our plays. Whatever happened to priorities?<g>

Like Graham, I minimize the number of places where my music's at, because I don't have a lot of time. Virtually everything is on Soundclick; I have a MySpace site, too (daughter talked me into it), so I have 3 songs (of a possible 4) posted there, too. For some reason, MySopace gets more attention--but the people who play the songs there rarely, if ever, comment. And I am interested in feedback. (*Not* the kind you can get by turning tha amp up to 11.)

Yep, Soundclick has got a rapper problem. There are a couple of the boards they haven't succeeded in running everybody out of--Country and Seniors--but they still invade every now and then (and hopefully get banned for spamming). I don't mind too much as long as people are listening to my stuff.

My bigger worry about Soundclick is it has so many subscribers, and appears to be running with such an antiquated operating system (I've seen Windows NT error messages some of the times it's gone off the air), I fear it may fall apart one of these days oif its own weight and be unable to be revived.

I accordingly have looked for an alternative place to stash music for when (not "if") Soundclick dies, and this iacmusic might be worth a look. I have high-speed Internet now, so that's not a worry. (As little as 10 months ago, it was.) I do not like the idea of having to pay for it, though. My Soundclick account is free, and I have some 50 songs posted there. And I have a second artist account there--also free--that I use for works in progress. It would be nice, too, if it were a place that had enough traffic so I could get some attention. Attention, after all, is the name of the game. I have subscribed to a couple of other sites that I later abandoned because there wasn't any traffic to speak of.

Good stats on the soundclick. I sort of gave up on CD Baby and Myspace, possibly because of the deluge of artists. Mind you soundclick has a million or so songs, so you must be cutting throught the noise somehow.

Joe, agree that soundclick is probably just too large, and as you say, overwhelmed with hiphop/rap artists. I still use it to share my music with fellow muso's, and the good thing about it, it's free.

Colin, No Chicks ! , the story of my life ! I gotta get back to being on a stage again, doesn't matter what you look like, there's still the odd groupie to be found. Though these days, they might be toothless and smell of linamint !

My song, "This Band Oughta Disband" by Cville Ramblings, has been added to the "KIAC Hitline" that is on the front page of http://iacmusic.com/ -- at the moment it is the 2nd song from the bottom. Sounds like it won't be there very long (they change those out a lot), but I still think that is pretty cool.

Can't say I have seen too much activity in the song play department -- they don't seem to update those stats very often.

It will be interesting to se what happens play wise on soundclick now they have taken my suggestion to make all latest uploads in each main genre stream playable in their plaer.
Working great for me so far.
I used to go to the charts and pit the player , then skip the first 20 or so as I figured that was the fan claub driven stuff, and rarely anything new.
Now we can listen to what has come in since our last visit, it is suiting me fine, and I am sure it will eventually be used as an A&R or artist looking for material tool.
Right now, I am finding it makes finding new backing tracks to come in a whole lot easier than going to each of the artists I know do these pages.

It looks like it is on the KIAC Hit list for a second day. It is now the last one on the list (probably gone tomorrow). However no changes in the play counts.

I wonder if they have any public stats on sales/dollar revenue generated. I may have to consider IAC prime down the road. If you sign up for 1 year it is only ~ 4.50 a month.

Hi Geoff!!..I didn't know about IAC?.......this is the first I've seen of it...

I don't know how most folks feel...but I'm more interested in
seeing downloads.... Because on streams?, I don't know if folks have stumbled on my site(s) clicked...and said...Nice..or if they've clicked ..listened.. and said Yuck, Not my thing....
and on fan clubs and the like?.., A rare 2 times, one of Wyman's and my children's songs...climbed up on it's own almost to the top of the SC charts a year after it was shared here at JPF..(2001,2002). back when there weren't near as many rap songs..and back when soundclick was much smaller. But it was neat, because it did it on its own long after its initial posting on these boards.

I'm really tickled when I have days where someone(s) come through and downloaded every song...or almost every one...or several of one song...it makes me smile and think ...'ok..,
someone out there is liking the recorded songs..and seeing through my playing on the worktapes. That happened again this past week I have 77 (i think?) on one...and 50 some children's songs on the other....It took someone some time and effort.... Being most of mine don't have vocals attached (but slowly are getting them)...It tickles me anytime someone takes the time to listen to piano work tapes.
