Its My Turn
2008 Caroline Holder

Ive got something to say
And I wont let you stop me, this time

Youve gotten your way
And now, its high time, I got mine

I want you to move
(Slowly)
Dont you talk
(Hold me)
Its My Turn

Ah, youve taken what you found
For so long , Ive forgotten what I need

Im turning the table around
Youre gonna do, as youre told, for me

I want you to move
(Slowly)
Dont you talk
(Hold me)
Its My Turn

And if you cant handle this one little request
Im sure theres someone, (somewhere) whod try their best

I want you to move
(Slowly)
Dont you talk
(Hold me)
Its My Turn

Oh, move slowly
Its My Turn
Dont you talk
Its My Turn

Caroline, I'll leave any suggestions to the others. wink

Direct, simple lyric, and of course coupled with Letha's distinctive goose-bump-raising voice, it's magic. grin
Do I love the song? Absolutely!

Hi Donna,

Thank you so much for the beautiful compliments. You don't know how much I really appreciate that you like it.

Caroline,

This is all your doing, lol. I was a little shy for you to tell people this was my vocal, but I guess they would probably guess anyway. I had to pretend like I was someone else to do justice to it, but I do love motown and R&B and soul, and Aretha Franklin has been my idol since I was a child, so I tried a version I thought she would do.

Yes, you did write a much more simple lyric than you usually do, but I really love simple sometimes.

I had fun, and if it had some real bluesy soulful organ, saxaphone or guitar it would probably come alive more. I can't do that though, lol. Maybe you can find one of good lead players in here that would like to try their hand at dubbing in some great blues lead?

Thanks again for your interesting writing, Caroline.

I agree that the arrangement could be better. The organ sound is quite thin and takes away some of the songs power. I like the soulfullness of the vocals.

Oh Yeah - That's some soul!

Love the vocal and the song. Agree that the backing track could be beefed up. Would be cool to hear what Sub could do with this. smile

Nice one, ladies!

Hi Change,

Thanks so much for listening. You are right in your observation about the organ part. I am only capable of the simplest backing on keys, and hopefully we can find a "real" keyboard player to give it what it needs. Appreciate you stopping by, Brandon, lol.

Hi Scott,

Thanks alot. I can give Caroline a good idea of what it needs, but sub would probably make this a real Aretha song lol.

Hi Tom,

What a nice compliment. We are all lucky in here to have the chance to work with other writers and artists. What a growing experience. Thanks so much.

Wow! I go to sleep for a few hours and y'all just listened and gave great comments.

I do believe Mike will be getting this (and many more) as he does such great music for anything he's involved in. There is so much talent here on these boards, it's amazing.

It's funny, I really didn't think the lyric was all that good. But I knew that even the alphabet, sung by annonymous, could sound cool!

Glad y'all like it.

I guess I missed this one somehow. I guess Letha is our Aretha, isn't she now? (LOL -- I just saw Letha's reference to Motown above).

I would like to see at least one section to be sped up a little (if that's possible). In any case, it is a soulful rendition and I like it a lot (Of course I am a fool for the old Motown stuff).

Kevin,
Yes, ANNONYMOUS is our own Aretha. I'd love to hear her cut loose in the last chorus, the bridge is building and then lets back to the restrained chorus we had at first. She can do it though, we all know she can. Mike just sent the music today, and I can't wait to hear the next version.

The old stuff is what we all need to refer to to get the feelings for this type of song. I had a melody in mind when I was writing, and ANNONYMOUS came close without even hearing it. Of course, her's is much better, but she has a natural talent for that, so I wasn't at all in a hurry to send her my shoddy recording. LOL

Thanks for listening and the new version should be here soon.

Letha,
Thanks for the listen. I haven't listened to a song in the same way since I've discovered this site and a few like it. There is so much talent out there, and vocals that could blow away most of the radio stars out of the water.

Ms. ANNONYMOUS, is an amazing talent in her own right, and I'd write something just to get her to sing it. LOVE that voice!!!!

Now, though, I have to complete a song for Mike to sing, since I've discovered he has his own amazing voice. I am soooo excited to write, even more than before. WooHoo!!!!

Hey Letha,
How was that for covering up the true culprit of this sound?? Hmm, not too bad I think, but somehow, they all figured out who it was singing. I'll do better next time. LOL

Glynda, you gotr overlooked yesterday in my typing frenzy. I got on, read, got off, (alright guys, get your smiles and get over it, you know what I mean here) I appreciate you're taking time to listen. It's been a hectic two weeks for me but I think I can get back to a more typical schedule here. I have a ton of songs to finish form last week, I started them, but had so many distractions that I couldn't finish a thing. UGH!!!

Anyway, thanks for stopping, I do appreciate the kind words.

Caroline: This has got a great gospel feel. Great easy to get lyrics with punch and honesty. My only idea here, is to build in a lift into it. i.e., as you get into the song, bring in additional voices and instruments- not too many- but slowly one at a time build it until you have rousing end to the song. WHen I am listening now its promising a knock out punch but sorta pulls that punch and ends softly, which is fine for some, but I started getting a strong Aretha feel in the middle here (Good work Letha!).
I would say just think: where would Aretha go with it?

Very good work!

OK, Etha-tay you've got your orders, lol, Aretha it up!

Paul,
Thanks so much for the input. I love this one, and I was surprised that Letha didn't send it back saying "Ummm, NO" LOL, she sounds so confident singing it, I couldn't get through the first chorus without giggling. It was fun trying though. Brave woman, that Letha!!

Caroline....very soulful performance....love the simplicity of the lyric....a big production would knock this out of the park....it really is good....I'm biased....because I like the soulful sound.....as an experiment I might would try to move up the tempo alittle to see how it sounds....don't get me wrong it's good as is....just my thinking....take care....Bob

A very grown up woman song, brilliantly sung...the musical intro made me feel I was walking into church...not sure if that's good or bad...

Very earthy and feisty..I'd definitely play it again...

Great lyric and vocals...
Production notes would be...tempo up maybe 8bpm
full music behind it, bass, guitar, organ, drums all need to be pumping, believe me Letha is able to carry it on top of a full production, as is she so upstages the music that it's out of balance
great starting point, i'd keep pushing this one forward
Happy Thanksgiving, great hearing ya'll working together for the common good of our ears!!! be well...moker

Hi all,

Thanks so much for your compliments. Caroline wrote a great song didn't she? We have some great music from Sub now, and I am working on recording it again, so hopefully it won't be long before I get it done and send it to her with Sub's soulful playing.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all,

Letha

Thank you Bob,

it's going to pick up a bit in the tempo, more soul, if that's possible. I'm biased too, the soulful sound is so moving. I was afraid it was too simple, but after Letha sang it, I was over that!

Caroline and Letha -

Wow, nice one. Simple and soulful. Letha, you really deliver on these vocals. Nice job, both. smile Can't wait to hear the latest version with Sub's music. Excellent song.

Opinions please?

This is a forum for helping each other out, so I have a performance question.

I seem to have some kind of growl that developed over the years, especially in bluesy songs or when I get to the hard driving notes. I have seen a couple of mentions about that, so here goes my vulnerable question. Should I try to eliminate or lessen that growling thing? Because I know it will come out in this song, it is like a monster in me.

lol, thanks for your thoughts.

My opinion is that you should sing it naturally...whatever comes out comes out....especially Blues singing....that's what is unique about the Blues singers....imho.....alot a people wish they could "growl" like you....this is one man's opinion and non-professional at that.....what I believe though....Bob

Letha,
the tones and differences in your vocals are what I love. The "growl" to me, is so natural, and so awesome, I look forward to it when you sing. That is what makes your vocal attractive to me, especially in a bluesy sound, it's perfect, imo, and it's also what I want to hear. I prefer to hear the feelings, not just the "perfectly clear, and polished" voices. Otherwise, I'd find someone else to sing. I know some may not agree, some may not like this sound, but personally, it's what I had been looking for and am sooo happy to have found!

Rob,
Thanks for the listen, I appreciate the kind words as well. Letha delivers on every song, but I think this one is one of my favorites. I'm partial to her vocal on a slow song, but I love the sassy ones too.

Thanks again for the listen and feedback. The new version should be coming soon, but there's no rush. It'll be awesome when it's done and well worth the little wait.

Caroline:

Cool song & concept. I like the lyrics and melody but it the tempo seemed too slow to me. I saw that Sub is working on this so I'm certain he'll unleash all the potential of this song.

Letha's vocals are outstanding on this!

Hi Mark,
Thanks for listening, I do appreciate it.

Sub sent me a track and with Letha's vocal, it's going to be amazing. The ending, last chorus, I'm hoping Letha cuts loose and goes with the feeling she has in the first line (last chorus) in the original version. That build was perfect to me, but I'll let her be the judge of what's comfortable to her. Her vocals are outstanding, and she's got so much talent I feel blessed to be able to work with her. And that Sub! WOW!!! the abilities he has, coupled with Letha's vocals, I'm so excited, I can't wait for the newest version.

Barry,

You're funny! Out of your element? I think you fit right in.

I've basically only written country, but once I heard Letha sing, I thought, hmm, I could write something she could light up! I feel wayyy out of my element hearing her sing. I'm floored by what she does with my words.

Thanks for the listen, and I appreciate the kind words.

Joice,
You too sweet! Hot Stuff, huh....I actually thought this was going to be a bit silly, but then I heard it and I had to reread what I'd written to make sure she sang what I'd written. It's amazing how much a little soul can do for a little lyric.

Thanks for taking time, I appreciate it.

Hey you two....

So this is what I've been missing out on, playing with my froggies?! grin :o

Man, this one is SMOKIN'! Caroline -- hot, powerful and yes, simple lyrics...Letha, as always a sultry, inspired performance. Love the "back-up singers"...and how the music rises and falls to match the "teasing/I'm in control/I'm setting the pace tonight, baby!" play of the lyric.

The only teensiest of nits I had was the ending of the bridge:

And if you cant handle this one little request
Im sure theres someone, (somewhere) whod try their best

For some reason, this doesn't fit right to me...she's not suggesting he's not going to try his best, she just wants him to shut up and do what she tells him to (in a nice way, of course). How about any of these?

And if you cant handle this one little request
Im sure theres someone, (somewhere)...

...WHO WON'T SECOND GUESS
...WHO'LL LOVE/DO/TRY WHAT I SUGGEST
...WHO'D LOVE TO TAKE THE TEST
...I COULD PUT TO THE TEST

I don't know that any of these are much better, and frankly, I stopped for only a nano-second anyway. I would be perfectly content if you left it alone....just wanted to call it to your attention.

But again, AWESOME WONDERFUL JOB, both of you. Needless to say, I'm anxious to hear Mike's treatment....

Cheers,
Beth

Hi Caroline, Hi all,

Thanks to all of you for listening and for your compliments. It sure means alot to me and I am sure Caroline too. I have taken a little time on this song, but I think we might finally have a final. After Sub sent me a REAL music track, I went back and did all the vocals over, and more in the backups. I took all your comments in, and Carolines wish for me to give it even more soul and cut loose at the end. then I read this comment:

WHen I am listening now its promising a knock out punch but sorta pulls that punch and ends softly, which is fine for some, but I started getting a strong Aretha feel in the middle here (Good work Letha!).
I would say just think: where would Aretha go with it?

Very good work!

paul

I did my very best, and remember, there is no one in the world like Aretha. But I have loved her since I was young, so I came as close to a song she would sing as I could.

Now, If she would only sing it lol.

Sub added something that inspires a singer I tell you! So much better than a thin little casio sounding chording behind it lol.
Thanks so much Sub, and Caroline.

I sent it to Caroline today, so I hope you all get a chance to listen to it when she posts it, and I hope you enjoy it.

I'll have to get it posted, after I've listened a few more times. Kidding, my computer isn't cooperating, if you'd like to load it on your soundclick and post it, that'd be fine with me. I'll get it up there as soon as I can get some cooperation.

Letha,
I do love it, btw, it's awesome. My speakers suck, but even with them being less than good, it's sounding great! GREAT I tell ya!!! I thought something was up with it at first, but them I plugged in my other speakers, and nope, it's mine, so I'm more than good!

shoo,

Thanks caroline, I am so glad you like it. I will post it in Urban/R&B, and if you post it, maybe it could be in Blues. That way it is not in the same Genre, and maybe we will figure out where it belongs lol.

If it needs any mixing adjustments after we get some input from the good ears here, I will be happy to do that. But pleaseeee, don't ask me for anymore soul on it, I gave it all the soul I got in me lol.

Here it is. Let me know if you have any nits about the mixing, that was one hard thing to do. All those voices bout gave me a migraine before I got them to stay under the red line, lol.

Lol,

Beth and Joice, thank you both. It is all because of Caroline and Sub. I tried to listen about the growl thing, but it has a mind of it's own. Caroline and Mike are driving this song.
And Caroline is the boss and she told me to growl and let go. Shoot she is making me work, lol (in a good way).

Letha, the growl is what sets you apart! I love it!!!

Beth, Joice, Ricki,
Thanks for listening again. Letha has put a lot more into this than she gives herself credit for. All I did was write a lyric, she brought it to life, and Sub! again, WOW!! an amazing talent all his own. I can't say enough good things about these two.

Caroline, Letha, here is my take on this song.

Firstly, it's a very good, original and the vocals are outstanding - how that little guy with the guitar in the avatar manages to sing like that is beyond me!

It's a song aimed at ladies obviously, but here's my man's take on it.

This lady is not happy with her mechanic, she takes her car in for service and all he ever does is fiddle around with the bodywork, rev the engine a little bit, quickly dips in the thing he uses to measure the oil with, then that's that it.

But the car keeps on breaking down, every time she revs it and gets excited - 'cos she likes driving fast - it limply breaks down at the side of the road, with a few puffs of smoke coming out of it.

As a listener, I felt the big moment - where she tells him she'll get a new mechanic if he doesn't start servicing her car properly - should have come quicker in the song. And then after this the rest of the song could take on a different feel - because he has agreed to her demands. The drum beat could perhaps speed up, and she can start singing lyrics that indicate she is now VERY happy with the service he is performing on her engine... then perhaps there should be a final climax when the engine is being revved so hard it blows a gasket, and there is oil and all other kinds of fluids going all over the place. And then right at the end... silence, other than the sound of a cigarette being puffed by both the mechanic and lady, content at what they have achieved together.

Just some thoughts, I might have totally misread the song and not understood it at all :-)

Lucian.

OK, now Lucian, I have to write that song too. It should be interesting.....to say the least.

This song, isn't about her not being happy with the performance, it's about her need for him to follow her cues, to worry about what she wants, not just what he wants. See, as much prowess as a man may have, every now and then, a woman wants to feel every single touch, she wants every motion to be deliberate, not rote. As exciting as it is to have a man know what he wants, it's equally liberating when a woman finally takes charge and says "uh-uh, it's my way tonight" The bridge, well, most women really don't want to move on, but sometimes you need a reminder, after time has passed, that there someone out there probably would jump out of their skin to have someone talk to them this way.

The song isn't about sex, it's about her needing him to take her desires into consideration, and her putting her foot down, finally, and telling him, "hey, buddy, I've done what you asked, now you repay the favor"

Anyway, I do understand where you're coming form, I've started writing on it, lol, I'm not sure Letha will be singing this one, LOL. But, listen again, without reading, and see if it feels any different to you.
