2/1 Update:
Well, after a valiant effort to prolong her bon voyage...Nonni quietly slipped away about an hour ago. I wasn't able to see her today because of the snowstorm, but I was there all weekend and spent a few hours with her yesterday morning. My one consolation is I know she knew how much she was loved -- and how much she will be missed.
As was her wish, she will be cremated...and on April 2nd, the day after what would have been her 105th birthday, we will be having a Celebration of Life service and gathering. By then we hope the emotions won't be so raw...and we'll be able to enjoy remembering what we had with her...instead of focusing on what we don't have any longer.
Thank you so much for all your prayers and positive energy. They've been very much appreciated.
Beth
1/26 Update:
It's not looking good. If she makes it thru the morning she's headed to hospice. Body starting to shut down. Yesterday crying, begging us to let her die. Intermixed with comments about "if you love me, why are you doing this to me?" and "you'll be happy when I die". Which is the furthest thing from the truth, but still, horrible horrible horrible to hear her say it, and to think she might feel like this now.
One thing though, which we thought was remarkable. Nonni has always been a very proud and vain woman -- still put make-up on, etc. In the midst of all this, she begged us to get her some clothes, because she didn't want to die in a hospital nightgown. So we did.
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. Please take a moment to wish her a peaceful and speedy passing.
BethHey there, Could really use some hand-holding. My 104-year-old grandmother Rose (aka "Nonni") is in the ICU with pneumonia and pleurisy. If you have a moment to send some healing thoughts her way, it would be much appreciated. ![[Linked Image]](http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo30/busygemini_bucket/NONNIsamcharl.jpg) ( l-r: great-granddaughter Samantha, Nonni, great-grandson Charlie) Thank you, Beth

Hi Beth:
This hits close to home. Three of my extended family (aunts and uncles... all in their hundreds) have passed away in the past year. We're talking WWII era folks who were the "salt of the earth" and really helped shape the life of a partially orphaned nephew as he attempted to get a grip on his little world.
I'm praying that Nonni is doing better and that the family will continue to enjoy her company for years to come.
Be well my friend. You are much appreciated.
Dave

Hi Beth, the oldest person that I know now is also the oldest person that I have ever known, and I have known him since I was ten years old. His name is Stanley Jones. He is 93 years old. His son is my best friend. Stan still hunts every season. Still shoots guns and dresses the kill. He goes to Alaska once a year to hunt for bear and elk.
The point is that people are living longer now. My father lived to be 84. That was a miracle.

Thanks everyone.
I'm just getting the kids off to school, then I'm heading over to the hospital for the morning.
Needless to say, I'm sort of sick to my stomach. Nonni is really like a second mother to me. My dad is her only child, and her husband -- my grandfather -- died when my dad was in college, so she's been a widow for 54 years! When my parents got married, they stayed with her in her home -- and never left. So I grew up with her under the same roof. She has certainly become frailer over the past year (she still lives at home under the watchful and exhausted eye of my parents)... but still, aaargh, the wondering/waiting is agonizing.
I try hard to not worry about things outside of my control. This one though is more than a challenge in that department.
Again, thank you all for your support and words of encouragement. It really means a lot to me.
Beth

104!!! my goodness. The things she must have seen.
I knew a fellow in the mid 1970's who was 105. He told some amazing tales of life before the automobile and indoor plumbing.
All my best to Nonni. I hope she is home very soon.
Get well Nonni

Wow! 104 years old, my mother was two month shy of 94 when she died. She was healthy right to her last year but wanted to die and go home. When you reach that age it is hard to know what to pray for, other than God's will be done. I heard a story about a person well on in tears, that requested not to be prayed for to get better, she wanted to go home.
I pray that Nonni's desire and God's will be fulfilled.

Absolutely! Bless her heart.
"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek

oh Beth, im so sorry to hear this, and hope I can help with the pain some, I know it hurts to hear her say this, but i've seen in the older patients, most of them say these things, and they even say them to us when we're working on them, and I always give them my best attention and my most loving care..but it still hurts when it's your own loved ones...my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time, I'm in the hospital now myself with pneumonia and asthma,or i'd lite my special candles at home for her....wish I could do more, you are a wonderful, wonderful gracious lady yourself and I hate to hear you going through so much pain....and i've found out, the hardest thing to do is letting go.....love you Beth...and i'll be thinking about you...glyn

Beth I know how you are feeling because my grandmother prayed that the Lord would take her towards the end and asked that we pray the same. I felt very conflicted because I truly loved her and was not at all accustomed to that kind of request. Because it was her time and out of love (though it wasn't easy) I prayed as she asked. I know she's in Heaven and I know I will see her again and that brings me peace. God give you the strength you need during this trying time.
Love and hugs, Lynn

Dearest Beth, I am so sorry to hear that your grandma is about to end her earthly journey. What a wonderful testimony of a woman as I can tell you love her and she is remarkable, and seen many things in her long life.
I hope God eases her journey and your hearts as you say a temporary goodbye...until you see her again
HUGS!!

Hi Beth, hope you're feeling better. Granny's are something, and yours lived a very, very long time. Both of mine passed within five years of each other. They were both widows for around thirty years each. Both grandfathers died young.
I hope the time from now till the memorial will bring out a lot of happiness and memories for the family. It should not be a sad time, but bittersweet with a lot of smiles. Ben

Dear Beth, It is hard to know what to say other than I am sorry for your loss and to leave you with this little thought that came to me after reading of Miss Nonni's passing... "Goodbye is a word that brings a shutter To our hearts and to our souls Though eternity is promised It’s never easy to let go But one thing that can bring us comfort When we miss their presence and we cry Is to remember, until we join them this a temporary goodbye" This is my belief. I hope 'tis yours and that you will find comfort in the many years of memories until the day comes that you meet again PS. I am sure the celebration of life in her honor will be something very special, as I bet she really LIVED that long life, I can see that sparkle in her eyes. Somewhat like yours Sending love your way, Kimberly

This is sad news, Beth. I'd deeply sorry for your loss.
I'm reminded of a beautiful poem by Mary Oliver.
Part of it goes:
To live in this world you must be able to do three things:
to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.
Donna
Honour the Earth. Without it, we'd be nowhere.
Life is too important to take seriously.

Beth, I'm sorry you have to go through the loss of someone you love so much. It's not going to make you feel any better to know I've lost both of my grandmothers and grandfathers, but please kknwo you aren't alone. It hurts but those memories will heal yu faster than you want to believe they will. Of course, 13 years after losing my grandmothers (both within 9 months) it still stings occasionally. It's supposed to, when you loved.

So sorry Beth.
I just found out today that my brother in laws brother passed away. He was just less then half Nonni's age. It's great to know she had what could be a double life span the way things are with life and the world.
Also that she went quietly and peacefully is a great comfort for your whole family. I treasure and am thankful everyday my Mom is with us. She is the only one left from generations past here. Know that Nonni's spirit is with you and the kids.
Take care & God Bless

Hard to let her go I'm sure, but there is a blessing and joy to her living as long as she did.
In amongst the sadness, there will be much to celebrate come April.
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

Hey, thanks everyone.
Your words have brought me comfort and tears today, and I'm grateful for both. We surely do have a lot to celebrate in April -- it's just going to be a long road getting there. One day at a time I guess. Though at the moment, I'm so TIRED, gosh. When I do finally put my head on the pillow tonight, I'll be thinking about Nonni finally sleeping with the angels....
Thank you again for your friendship.
Beth

I'm sorry, Beth... But I think it's a great idea to wait until April for a celebration. At that point, your memories will be more balanced over the whole time you knew her - rather than weighted to the past few days. And there will be as much laughter and smiles as there are tears. Scott
