I can just hear a bunch of my peers (I'm 45 years old) outright dismissing this video because they think of Taylor Swift as "just a pop star" or because she is so young. But I look at it as: she's written #1 hits and I haven't (!), plus she has insights about her generation that I find valuable

Yes, Taylor's written songs that struck a huge chord with her fans and she's built a massive following. Remarkable.

Hi Ande,
I plan to read this on my days off, but I study pop county, country crossover these days, particularly Taylor cause she writes her own lyrics.
She writes about life and she writes from the heart, I think that's most of what I need to know. I think she's awesome, I know there are some that won't agree. I'll get to that post as soon as I can!

YouTube Presents reminds me of, and makes me miss MTV Unplugged.
I think most songwriters write songs the same way. Taylor said that she was in her room, thinking about a guy her parents didn't want her to date and the, "...my Daddy said stay away from Juliet," came into her head.
I think all of the songs I've written have started like that. Just one or two lines that you really love, and you're not sure where in the song they are going to go, but you start building the song around that line.

This is the approach I'm working with on my next release. In the past I usually wrote the 10 or 12 songs and went with it. This time around there's 68+ songs getting whittled down to 12 to make the release.
I concur that each song has to have that "Hell Yeah" feeling to it this time around. Problem is, I think there's more than 12 songs giving that feeling. It will be interesting to see what makes the cut. Then it moves into the arrangement and recording phase.
Can't wait.
