Scott, I don't recall ever seeing a song title that described the song itself. So this is a first! Ain't that just cool?

I love the way all the verses support the chorus:

"There’s things that amaze, there’s things that astound
There’s things you can’t wrap your mind around"

Another Campbell Classic! And ain't that cool?!

V1 and V2 are out of the park Scott. V3 is a bit of a head scratcher and and V4 is OK albeit on the predictable side.

This Could be a classic IMO.

I love the harp on this. Very solid playing. The musical presentation is good. Nice. A simple presentation that is really effective.

I hope you have another go at v3 and v4 lyrically. If you could end with something as fantastic as your beginning, you really will have a classic IMO.

I think it's a cool song! I wonder if the title might be a tad stronger as "Ain't that SO cool.

I agree with Ian that the 3rd and 4th verse aren't as strong as the first 2 verses but they're not bad. If I can think of any ideas I'll come back to this.

Phrase just pooped into my head when I was noodling on my dobro. I haven't done an exhaustive search - I'm sure there are songs out there with this title. But I was surprised when I googled it and didn't see a screen full of them come up.

Funny how things work out, Ian - Verses 3 and 4 were done first and are my favorites

Maybe a couple of disclaimers though - I might like V3 because of it's skewed viewpoint. I'm probably patting myself on the back for being clever when something more conventional would work better. Yeah, might not want a head-scratcher there.

I gotta keep V4 though - that was the whole point to the song - which is kind of a looney Valentine's Day gift. I couldn't come up with any better ideas - you tend to use your good ones in the first 10 years or so.

Even V1 and V2 seem a little "out there" to me to be considered classic. Might be cooler to talk about things that are more ordinary on the surface - but I went that direction so as to try to provide a strong counter-point to V4.

Perhaps I am overthinking

I think the head scratching is the best part of the song. Had to listen to it a couple times. Couldn't wrap my head around it.

In my minds eye, I'm going fishing walking down a train track wearing overalls with one hand in my pocket and one holding my tackle with absolutely nothing on my mind but just how cool things really are !! I worked it out on Dobro in open tuning - not even knowing what the chords were. When I figured them out after the fact I found some combinations that wouldn't have ordinarily occurred to me. Love when that happens

I came up with the melody first so I guess maybe it needs the right lyric

I dunno about coming back from the dead. I've read stories about folks who died on the operating table and were then brought back. Many claim to see a tunnel with a light at the end of a tunnel or even that they were floating above the scene looking down on it. Whether it's real or a dying brain playing tricks on itself is up for debate I reckon. Either way, I think it's cool

I listened to this one when it first hit the airwaves, but I didn't get a chance to comment until now. As always, a great little bounce along tune. Cool instrumentation and the lyrics are quite interesting and really good.

I think the problem is that those 1st 2 verses are believable/mystical/magical/mysterious things that most people accept as REAL PHENOMENA. You make it the focus of your lyric and then seem to abandon the emphasis.

This Is REALLY good writing Scott. And it's an incredibly tantalizing start. I hope you're not mad at me for not thinking it's finished!

IMO, this isn't the type of writing were the verses lead to or necessarilly support each other.
The only thing the verses have in common is how they make the writer feel.
In order for it to work I think you must take the verses as snap shots of completely different scenes, though very different they leave you with the same feeling or thought.

Instead of verses building on each other they simply reinforce the theme, "Ain't that Cool".

I think it's a very creative but risky style of writing.
The writer must commit fully, if they write the first verses in this style then get nervous and reverts back to trying to actually link the final verses then the song will loose it's uniqueness and focus.

Ian, I love reading your feedback. You are so detailed and generous with your knowledge. I'm not challenging your assessment of the song, I just wonder if Scott was trying something a litle different in the structure of the song.

I think verse 4 IS mystical and magical, not every gal could even dream of such a valentine, I think if I thought that kind of thing was real, I would melt, I think your wife got a wonderful present, in this song and in you my friend, great job!!

I disagree about the verses though. I think V1 and V2 are quite similar for the reason stated, and 'set the stage' in terms of focus quite strongly. I think Scott could also go the way you're suggesting by changing up V1 or V2. But as it is, when you get to V3 halfway thru the tune, it's a bit of a meander to my ears.

Didn't read all the posts yet but will. I really liked this but didn't want to get distracted. I felt a disconnect with your 3rd verse about the Milky Way. Quite honestly I didn't understand it's meaning and they say you should never have to explain a song. I took the liberty of making a few suggestions and have them below in bold. Keep or sweep my friend.

By the way... on the "boom, boom boom" I think it would be great to add a drum to just those3 notes/words.

On the other hand, my wife's gift to me was a home-sewn Hawaiian shirt (I've got a collection of about 20 she's made me) with a Route 66 theme teepees, dinosaurs, old cars, etc - so I reckon we're even. I'd even say the shirt is cooler than the song

Hey Ian and Nelson:

Hope you guys don't mind that I address your points in the same post - you both have some good ones.

I put this together with the exact approach that Nelson described - really I had in mind that the first three verses would be completely unrelated with the only common basis being that they were all cool (to me).

But Ian has a point - the first two are probably a little too similar in outlook - leading the listener to look for a pattern only to have it blown up in verse 3. Actually, I don't want it to be blown up until verse 4.

So there are two ways to go here and Ian has already outlined them. Make verse 3 fit with 1 and 2. Or change one of the first two verses so that all three verses are, for lack of a better word, perpendicular to each other.

So that the song still hits with the intended impact, I probably favor the second approach. However, I might just put everything on the table - I'm still thinking of having the first three verses be things that are more subtle or not as far out there - as the desire to write a more classic song is always present.

But it still has to be cool - so a pretty big challenge there.

I'll just have to give it some more thought
