John, playing with a band is always a challenge, dynamically. Especially at a rehearsal. You end up playing music on instruments that are designed to handle volume levels apropos of public performances, in someone's garage, basement, or rec room. You end up putting t shirts on the snare drums. Jerry, yes, indeed, dynamics are very passionate. From the gentle to the aggressive...oooh, I'd better calm down. Emily. Acoustic music can be very dynamic, the downs are more real, the ups are more unexpected. One thing I find, these days is the compression of music. I don't mean the use of "compressors" as in the recording industry, I mean the compression of the dynamic range. We play the 1812 Overture on five inch speakers in our bedrooms. The cannonade is not like one touched off in Tchiakowski's day. When mastering, I find the "acceptable" range, from the softest "useful" sound to the loudest possible on the cd is quite small. The whole range is compressed. Keep 'em coming, folks. Mike
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music
