Hi Frank,
Of course I had to do a search of "O Captain" and "Prisoner," and while I was doing that, I popped in my Les Miserables CD....and I'm impressed by your strange analogy! I could see a little of each of these things in the song. Although, ironically, I read that "O Captain" had a conventional meter and rhyme scheme, which was, they say, unusual for Whitman!
So, you're correct -- it sure ain't country! I always imagine a grand stage production when I listen to Aaron's music!
(Also, death was not supposed to be in the equation here...just a broken heart!)
