For those suggesting people intro their lyrics with what they are looking for I have 2 words for you: I agree.

I am not sure how you get people to bother to do it but I'd never post something without that type of info in the first place. If you don't know what you want/need from feedback, how can anyone else guess correctly? Tell them what you want and then hope that some can offer it. It's obvious and I am not sure how to make it happen beyond including that in the guidelines page that we're talking about creating for the new boards.

Speaking of which I communicated with the tech people and then explained we actually have to update the board 3 times to get it current. That means it will cost us more than we thought and it will require the board to be down at least 24 full hours. I told him we'd need to have a little advanced notice to let folks know. As soon as I have a date, I will let you know.

Thanks Brian...for responding... I can only speak for myself...but..yes ...I am guilty of equating...the word commercial....with better ( at least at times).....as I am working toward the goal of placing my songs in a few genres.....

Definitely food for thought...thanks... [Linked Image]

best wishes.......

Well Brian, can you name me 50 number one hits without words, odds are you'd have to back to the days of The Ventures, The Tijuana Brass, Brazil 66, and Hugo Montenegro. Words count even if they are the inane ones the teeny boppers in the back of my taxi are so gleefully singing...!

I can name more #1 songs that have no words than I can that have no music. How about you?

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your response.

I have wondered why it is so important to many whether you plan to 'pitch' the song right away after you write it. Since I don't know yet who I'm 'pitching' to, I suppose that might be confusing for people. It even confuses me which is why I leave a lot of mine "on the back burner". It's not that I think they are "perfect". Heck, I will only sing two of my songs in public!

I'm sorry if it seems to folks that their time is being wasted critiquing mine. Right now I still have a lot of research to do before I understand the different markets for gospel out there. But I'm trying to learn the market. Just ordered 4 new CD's last week. Can't remember the artist's names but they seemed to be singing some revolutionary type gospel.

As far as I know, no one has gotten upset with any of my critiques. But I have noticed it does seem to upset some if you don't use their suggestions. Believe me I know what it feels like for someone not to use one of your suggestions. I got over that quick and I still offer them if I have an idea.

When I first started posting (on another forum) I incorporated a LOT of suggestions (I do like to try and please people). That led to my first collaboration. After his home- published demo was completed, I realized he'd made several changes including adding a tag that turned the whole song into something I couldn't promote. I wasn't comfortable saying, "I hate the tag." or why. It was an awkward situation.

Now, I don't take a suggestion unless I really agree with it or like it. But that doesn't mean I think my song is perfect or ready for market. Most of my gospel songs I can't figure out what subgenre' they even fit with. Not because I'm so unfamiliar with gospel music but because mine are so different.

What I said earlier had more to do with supporting the need for guidelines to new posters than anything else. What if a new writer wants to chart new territory in music? How do they convince others they are serious even though there might not be a market for what they are writing at the present time? Is this unheard of? How did we get all the genre's we have today?

rd

Will those of you who only write for giggles, please stand in the corner and be counted, and will those of you who write in non-commercial genres please form a circle. You see it's important that us gifted country and pop writers know straight off who the laughables are; otherwise how would we know who to ignore. Thank you kindly!

Ritt,

A Cappella songs are not lyric only. Do you not understand that? Find me your #1 songs that are nothing more than a lyric without a melody. Then we can compare those to the hit songs that have no lyrics.

Let me know when you have a list.

are you badgering me, lol, where's the lord of this board, uhoh that's you! LOL, anywho the word song has inherent in it that there'd be music, your argument though witty and compelling serves no useful purpose.

Okay Ritt,
I know of a number one A Cappella hit that had no music. It was called "I had a Dream" by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. . It may not immediately be thought of as a song , but ; songs have different deffinitions.

Can I come out of the corner now , Ritt ?

Hey Guys,

You sure do write intersting posts over here on Lyric3.......

It's intersting to note, that there are a number of lyricists that don't think of a song as a whole. It is exceptionally difficult to give a critique on a song, which is lyrics or music only,( and is therefore not yet a song ) as only part of the picture is being seen.

I got some great help here, ironing out the wrinkles on a recent number, and I would encourage those that don't regularly drop by mp3, to do so, even if not musically inclined, and lend a hand where most of the times the lyrics are posted.

I think songwriters overlook many things, both musically, lyrically and structure wise, and if you have a particular interest and can provide constructive help, it's all taken on a positive note.

I think collaboration works exceptionally well where each party has their own focus, but can also bend to the needs of the song itself as it progresses.

An intersting aspect would be a board for "Help Wanted", i.e. here's a tune, write me a lyric, or here's the theme of a lyric, write me the score.

This was always how it was done with the great songwriting partnerships of the past,....wonder what happened to that ? Would it possibly work in this day and age ?

cheers, niteshift

Brian, thanks for the acknowledgement on my post. I see what you are saying about naming specific genres. Fair enough. Makes sense.

The no music hit thing makes me think of a Todd Snider story about a band that booked gigs and then took the stage and refused to play. The crowd loved it, so they tried to get a record deal. The record co told them they could not sell records with no music on them. The band replied, "hell, you've been doing that all year !" [Linked Image]

Ritt, do you write for the editorial page in your local newspaper? I think you'd make a great cartoonist with the day's food for thought!

"Will those of you who only write for giggles, please stand in the corner and be counted, and will those of you who write in non-commercial genres please form a circle. You see it's important that us gifted country and pop writers know straight off who the laughables are; otherwise how would we know who to ignore. Thank you kindly!" Rittman

If you can draw a cartoon for this, I'd be willing to buy it for my muse room! This is one of the best I've read!

That is not to say that is what's going on here at JPF..it's just a comical way to look at what could be if we weren't thinking feeling sort of people! [Linked Image]

I frankly LOVE JPF's Lyric Board(s) because ya DON'T have to Declare a Lyric "Fer Fun" vs "Commercial." MOST of What I Write IS "Experimental" these days, if only to Inspire Me to put weary Pen to Paper.

BUT...MANY a Major HIT HAS been "Experimental"...(The Byrds "Turn, Turn, Turn" comes Immediately to-mind.) Wouldn't stand a GHOST of a Chance of Passin' via the Nashville "Experts" here..YET sold well over a Million Copies/would do so Again, Today, IMO.

There's some Very Decent "Cross-Pollination" between "Country" and "Pop" oriented Writers here. I enjoy reading Calvin's VERY Condensed Lyrics..then hopping to some of the (They Shall Remain Nameless) REAL "Hefty-Line-Lengthers" to see if some of Cal's Style's "Rubbed Off"...

Over time...it Has...(We've ALL rubbed off a bit on Each Other's Output, IMO.)

Which, of course, gets us Back to The Good Ol' JPF Motto, eh? :-)>

As for the "Theft" aspect...I hope The JPF Boards remain "Intact" forever. They're, JMO, one of the best "Dated Records" of just WHEN you put out each New Lyric..kind of the Ultimate "Poor Man's Copyright...as long as the Data remains Accessible/Retrievable. (Also HOPE you'd at least Publish the Demise Date should it ever come to that, Brian...I lost over a year's-worth of Lyrics when "Hujo's Nashville Lyric Line" site went belly-up UNexpectedly, around yr 2000.)

No Biggie...I just penned some More..hopefully Even Better Ones. ;-)>
&, Yeah, many of 'em DID actually "Suck"
a bit...BUT..(Huge, MONSTER "But"..) you probably GOTTA write 50-100 "Sucky" Songs BEFORE you'll have Your Brainstem Allign Properly and OUT comes that HIT "Angle" or HIT "Hook" or "HIT Melody"..(Hopefully, ALL three at ONCE?)..

In closing..(it's been a LONG Monday)..I (personally) got a decently Big Kick outta a Critique I gave a "Pro" not too long back on his Song-Posted. Said he'd used a Tired Rhyme or Two..& la die da..& suggested he get a BOOK on Songwriting, Too...to help the poor dude out.

He replied with a Nice Summary of a Decent Career as Producer/Sound Man/Etc over several Decades..etc.

I let it drop, BUT frankly, ANY Nitwit CAN write a "Filler Song" for a CD Project (remember, I WAS just critiquin' his LYRICS?)..& That's What I Saw There...Pro or NO Pro. (& I didn't really CARE that The Melody "sounded like U2"..)

Not even PROs always wanna hear An Honest Opinion on these Boards...

But it's Fun and Well-Deserved to Give EVABODY One who Posts Here...AND hope LOTS of Diamonds can come out of The Rough as "Practice-Makes-Perfect"...

Big Hugs & G'Nighty,
Ol' Stan

Just an update:

I paid for the new boards so we are locked in. The tech guy there said he was going to first install the new boards on our site to make sure they are working and then he will transfer all the old files over. I am paying him extra to try and approximate the look of these boards (color etc..) so that the transition will be a little less of a shock to everyone (including myself). He said he will then let us know when the files will be transfered meaning the boards will be down for at least 24 hours.

Thanks to those who donated for the upgrade. We still want to add a simple chat room to our site. That's our next project.

Brian, can't wait to see the new boards! My thoughts were the same on not shocking us too much with a new look...it just wouldn't feel the same. This is exciting though! Congratulations!

Pete , nutty professor...did you get my email? Or did it go straight to spam?

Hey Folks,

If you didn't check out the new version before, here's an example of it from the companies site. As you'll see there's TONS of new features, but it also is similar to ours. Once the colors/styles are set similar to what we have no, you should feel at home pretty quick. But lots of cool stuff to check out. Please do and tell us what you think!

Brian, I've used similar forums before. They all seem to have a lot in common. Once the colors are set then it shouldn't look so busy. As is, it looks like a newspaper with boring colors and busy columns. The "top posters" seems like wasted space but it probably is needed for that particular site I suppose. Not sure if I care much for that for us. Would rather see the space for something more productive like maybe feature one of our lyrics or mp3's weekly or something like that?

Any news of when JPF will be down? Take care, Linda

ok, let me rummage around without asking me to sign in; interesting watching techies chat; overall look is fine, without posting, I'm assuming there's going to be color options, and it said we will have avatar options; but I'm slow on the uptake at this sort of stuff, so I'm sure there's more...!

Ritt,

That's not "our" board so you wouldn't have a registration there in the first place (though you CAN register and they are happy to have anyone do so to test it all out.. that's part of the purpose of their thing).

Linda: I don't know when the new board will be switched over. Still waiting. There may be more things that can be put along either side and we'll probably take advantage of some fun things. The calendar set up will allow us to post chapter meetings, roadtrip events, birthdays and other stuff so it's useful I think. The colors should be very similar to what we have now (at least I am paying the programmer to do that.. I hope he gets it close). They are always adding stuff to their program so if people have features they want once we start using it, we can suggest them and I bet if they are reasonable they might include it as they continue working on it.

Our board is 6 years old going on 7. It will be a shock to our systems for it to change (especially mine) but it will stop crashes, it will be far safer for all our older posts than this one and it will be harder for folks to hack into. We should be able to avoid spam much more easily too. Progress is good even if it is sometimes painful and annoying. In the end, I think it will help us grow the community.

sounds great Brian! I belong to a board that was overtaken by someone who posted a zillion postings of absolutely nothing and did it again and again several times after it was cleaned up. We're talking postings and messages from people throughout Maine and parts of New England that couldn't be retrieved for several days. Lots of offers were expired by time the board was back to normal and when we could finally read the outdated message.

Hi Brian,

I checked out the site. I really like how the side boxes give additional info. along with the forums in the center. How will you be using the calendar? That has some neat possibilities for the local JPF chapters as well as your roadtrips, etc.

I am ok with 1 lyric forum. I think new people naturally go to Lyric Forum 1 since it is the first one listed and by going to 1 lyric forum it should become all inclusive. My only concern is that when I did post at 3, my post went off the page so fast I didn't get a chance to say thanks for the feedback before it was on p. 2.

Thanks for this site. Vondelle

Hi Pete,

That's what I get for reading the unwritten rulebook. Q doesn't want me exploding any of his new inventions. I was wishing Q had a forum all to hisself to give songwriting contests (from hereon referred to as missions) to us OOSes who want to travel on said missions. I propOOSed such a thing in the post under General Messages to Brian in his thread there asking for input.

Thanks to all those who donated so we could get the new boards... it will take a little getting used to but there are TONS of really cool features like private emails on the site, private group discussions, the shout box so you chat real time with anyone on the site, and you can upload pictures and possibly even other files if we turn that feature on (haven't decided how we want to do that yet).

Please help others by sharing your tips and tricks as you learn all the features here.. and be sure to add your birthday into the calender via the My Stuff link at the middle top of the page.

This'll take some getting used to. One negative thing that jumped out at me is the 5 page deal. It'll take a long time if you're fishing for some old lyrics (not specific ones that you can search).

Brian,
It DOES have edit where you said, on this post for me. But I KNEW I couldn't have missed that, so I went back to MY original post to change a lyric, and it's not there (thank goodness! :)). I was thinking maybe it isn't recognizing me as the originator????

Yeah, Petie. I KNEW there were more than 92/3. Don't tell me all the early ones have gone to that graveyard lyric site in Altoona!

Brian,
HERE'S a copy of what shows up on my lyrics...no 'EDIT"

Hello Everyone.

The only suggestion that I can make, and if already said, I apologize, to make the lyric boards more music type intended?
For instance, I don't think I would critique a rap, since it isn't my bag. So maybe one would be for country/blues
two would be for pop/rock and three for everything else. Or some combination of boards. That's all I could even think to do with them. I know I click on some of them and feel that they aren't for me to offer anything to.

The site has a 360 minute on edits limit. Beyond that you have to get a moderator to change it.

As for posts, you just have to click the farthest left arrow to get to the end of all the posts which are there.

Some people asked about being able to rate lyrics. Well, this board has the ability. You can rate a post which could easily be used by everyone to rate a particular lyric. It's a 1 to 5 scale. Pretty cool eh?

Lemme try once again, Brian.

I would LIKE to edit my lyrics, but the options are this:

Reply Quote Quick Reply Quick Quote Notify Moderator Email Post

NOW, I DO get the edit option elsewhere (like this thread) that I've posted, but not on MY ORIGINAL lyric. In fact, think I'll edit this.

EDIT: I rest my case. I cannot do this on the threads I started.
The option isn't there. Maybe no one else has tried editing their own lyric yet, but believe me, I've tried it on 3 different ones, and the option isn't there.
Further, I NOW see on this edit, I have THREE options, as follows:

Change Post I want to preview my changes Delete Post

There is no "submit", so I'll copy this and put it as a new post.....
