Here's another one I pulled off an old unmarked CD. It's called Beyond the Blues and was written by Robert Kvinnesland and Richard Pirone. Back at the old and now defunct Dan Gray's Freedom Exchange site some years ago RobertK as we called him put up a contest to do a demo of this song. This was my version which won second place. I haven't put up lyrics as I didn't have a hand in writing it and I think the listener can make out the words. If not I'll be happy to come back and list them. On a special note, I did get RobertK's blessing to include this on JPF for the first time.

This is a great song Stevie and you did it real well.

Robert and Richard well done.

I can relate to a lot of it in an earlier life...

great lines

Hi Steve,

Wow, you done good! I don't know if it's my computer speakers or not...but it sounds just a hair trebly...I know, this coming from the gal who is just starting to learn mixing! I'd also like to hear a fade-out at the end rather than the dead stop. Just opinion, mind you, as it actually has a very "radio ready" sound!

Steve,

I really liked this song, but for the first half the high sound, and I'm guessing it is the guitar?? is a bit too loud, but I really like the harmonies and the overall sound is really nice!!

Just a terrific job on that, Steve. It's very catchy and your trademark jangly guitar is perfect for it. I would have preferred a fade out too but that's a minor nit - this is fantastic!

This needs to be on a CD with a name. Fantastic job. That first place winner must have been a killer because this one is great.

Thanks for taking time to listen and comment Ellen. Sounds fine on my studio monitors. Probably you're just hearing the jingle jangle of the Rickenbacker 12 string guitar. It's supposed to sound that way.

Howdy Scott,
I wanted to fade it out myself but the rule of the contest was supposed to be that we stayed faithful to the rough demo the authors made up. This is the way they had it so that's how I produced it. Unfortunately the guy who won didn't follow the rule and took it in a completely different direction. One of the co-writers thought the alternative sound was more marketable than my retro sound.

Actually this version was the first rough demo I did. I know that because the bass line is really basic and stays mostly on the root notes where the final version was more melodic on the bass but I have no idea what happened to it. I just discovered this version by accident. Anyway, thanks for the listen and compliments. They are appreciated.

Thanks Pal,

Steve

Hi StevieB,

Very well done on your music and production. Great harmonies too. What a great sound. What would you have won if this had come in first?

Why Thank you Ricki. 1st place was $150. I made $75 and then RobertK sent me a set of concert bells as an additional gift.
It was very nice on his part and pleasantly unexpected by me.

The lyric seems too generically philosophical. The singer-character is talking about 'you' throughout, never an 'I' to interact with the 'you' or to be the one with all these feelings. I wonder if the lyric could be re-written to make it a first-person statement of a point of view. It's hard to stay with line after line of philosophy without a concrete reality to apply them to. I only listened twice but didn't get that sense of somebody in the song. The 'you' came across as the collective you, saying any listener is experiencing these feelings, in my opinion, not the singer-character or any other specific person. I just wonder if the lyric could be tweaked to strengthen the sense of story, rather than abstract or general philosophy.

Thanks Gary for the critique but as for this song, I can't do anything about changing it either musically or lyrically as it is not my song. I just did the demo you heard.

Hey, Ho, Steverino! Talk about a blast from the past, I just stumbled upon your posting here. Brought back quite a few memories of the good times of yore on both Dan Gray's old board and the JPF board (which I believe also has all of the original demos posted way back in 2003).

Since a few here have asked within this thread, the entry that won (way back when) can be heard at the link below (listed as the 'avant rock' rendition which, although it didn't really follow my proto-demo the way I wished, sounded the most 'radio-ready' at the time... which was the contest main criterion for said demo).

For the record, I liked Steve's arrangement better, but Rodney Gene's studio advantages and performance took the judges' nod when all was said and done... at the time, he was actually out performing in local clubs as his main occupation.

And, if anyone cares, in the spirit of how a given song takes on quite a different life, depending upon the performance:

The "real, final, bona fide, end-product" demo is also there in a more countrified renditon, and which follows to the letter my original proto-demo tape in arrangement and vocals... including the fade-out that was intended from the start, and which quite a few have mentioned here.
