I haven't listened yet but it's all here and just needs inspiring sing-along, bouncy melody to be a success.

For kids . . . I'd forgo the "blues" part as kids would be more ready and eager to relate to a happy cricket -- and besides if you say he's blue then it begs a reason why, which you don't need.

If you say "were a hopping"
then you would use "when" in line 2
