Statistics can be fun... Roughly 15 million vinyl discs were sold in 2015. A 37% increase from the previous year. However, if you look at the sales from the previous year over year prior and that was over 100% increase - thus the idea of vinyl sales is actually tapering off.
Digital download sales are dropping. The estimate is 9% for albums and 12%, but that is 2014. Not sure the numbers for 2015.
What most of these numbers mean to people that watch a particular niche is: Man, vinyl is making a comeback! Hurray digital sales are going away!
Both of which are actually false statements.
Vinyl is a niche. Digital download sales still amount to billions.
What all these numbers are ignoring are streaming figures - streaming is well over the billions mark and outpaces everything in terms of sheer volume.
Thus the whole vinyl is making a comeback is weird, 15 million in sales compared to billions in downloads and billions in streaming?!? Streaming growth is outpacing vinyl's comeback by orders of magnitude.
Vinyl is fun. But its niche.
BTW - I saw a company at NAMM this year selling a way to cut vinyl discs one by one from your own digital files. If you're so inclined to jump on the vinyl wave, be real cutting edge and buy a way to lathe your own vinyl discs to sell. At least this way you're cutting them as needed. I didn't ask the cost of the device. But I bet it would take a ton of sales to pay off the cost of the device. Oh and it had to work in real time. A very slow way of cutting vinyl.
I've had only one fan ask if I would sell vinyl. I imagine pressing up one vinyl disc would be astronomical. Things that have to be done are: different mastering (mastering for vinyl is entirely different from mastering for CD/Digital), making sure you can fit the music on each side of a disc, vinyl costs, lathing costs, artwork reproduction costs, packaging costs, shipping costs.
What is missed with digital files or streaming is: you can't throw files at someone or the wall when you're upset.
