My bad. I clicked on the streaming link which is some sort of Flash-enabled format. The straight MP3 link worked fine.
We may be on to something here. The song I heard does sound like you're listening from the back of a half-empty bar. I would cut back on any verb used on the instruments. The vocal is out front, but everything else sounds like it's in the next room.
Keep experimenting, you'll get it right.
