this is all way better advice than what i have to give you. i just wanted to point out that sometimes vocal mic techniques cause problems like this... i've noticed that people who sing "off" the mic in order to eliminate pop's and hard "s" sounds sometimes sound a little more distant than people who really get right on top of the microphone. i have no scientific justification for why this is true.

i use a 58 with a pop filter i made out of a coat hanger and my girlfriend's old panyhose. this has the dual advantage of letting me get right on top of the mic while looking completely ridiculous.
