I agree with Scott about the "really matters" being in conflict with what the song is saying. Here is a fix for you if you would like it:
Since this is a dialogue between two people, being careful with "you" is important.
I don't know I've always been the kind, to take one day at a time Life passes so fast and when I look behind.... what mattered most were the things that didn't last ...... and the loves I had to let go
If you set it up this way, it is not saying that things that didn't last were most important but that what the singer had lost was important to her/him.
Nice tune.
Re: Chorus: You may want to consider dropping the repeat of speculation in the chorus and adjusting the final note so that it would be like this
