Hey Alan,
I respectfully disagree with what you said about fingering the maj7. For giggles I just pulled out my "Mel Bay Encyclopedia Of Chords", and low and behold there were many. When you get into inversions, the same chord can have more than one name, depending on how it's used, whether there is emphasis on the root note, etc. Example, I like using a Bmin7 configuration against a Dmaj, and it sounds great. My old keyboard player taught me that, and I just ran with it. Your comments were valid in this case, but I prefer to think a little more outside the box.
Not trying to confuse the whole situation, but as I said above, just a different tack.
