It will come with practice, you are right. I think sometimes we are a bit misleading, when we say, "It takes lots of hard work". That doesn't even begin to say it. When I was first learning, I remember spending days, not hours, at a time. I guess I had nothing better to do, and as an 8-9 year old my stamina was up to the challenge. Today, that kind of thing would kill me.
