In Finale NotePad, if you put too few notes, when you move to the next measure it adds rests for you--at the END of the measure--even if your "missing" note was at the beginning or in the middle. It can be frustrating--esp. if you were just going up to click on the "rest" button to fill it in. But--it's better than nothing, and you can't beat the price tag on NotePad.
A friend of mine swears by his full-featured 2000 version, and says it's not that much different from newer versions. Sometimes you can find the full package out there on eBay for less, if you don't mind a 2003/2004 Finale. I haven't invested in it yet, but I will someday.
