I love 9/8. A fast 9/8 in Irish music is known as a "slip jig." If you stress the third count, it's often called a "hop-jig."

Figuring the time signature is more an art than a science. A lot of it is up to discretion. Basically the top number tells you how many, and the bottom number tells you what kind of note values are in the measure. For example, in 9/8, there are nine beats in the measure and the eighth note or rest constitute one beat.

No matter how wild the time signature gets, you can always divide it up into threes and twos. It's either babaloo or it's bubba. five four is either babaloo bubba or bubba babaloo. Seven four as in the Pink Floyd "Money" would be Bubba Bubba Babaloo.
