You mentioned Take Five and asked if it was a play on words. I presume you were being rhetorical, but yes of course it was a play on words. That album was a milestone in popular jazz music because it was entirely devoted to odd time signatures. Every tune on it was an exploration of odd signatures and it is a truly GREAT album. Take Five, the tune, was obviously the most popular and well known of the tunes, but everything on that album was so lyrical while exploring the odd timings. It was not the first recording to use an odd time signature, but it was the first the was done entirely as an exploration into odd time signatures. It demonstrated just how lyrical you could be without having to resort 3/4 or 4/4 (or variants) times.
