I think I backward engineered the "abrupt" bridge, in that I wanted a "breakdown" in the chorus after the bridge, and so the choice was to approach the breakdown with even less happening before it, or more, and less seemed obvious.

I thought the music stopping completely matched the bridge having the singer do a non-sequitur, and totally face thinking about him, directly. She was getting more serious, in the bridge, and so I tried to compliment that with a more somber section, that starts up from a standstill.
