The radio gets broken and for the first time in the story he is trying to convey the Magic Persona to another player in the story by saying "you dont understand". A new event I guess a new element to the story.

No, you read it right. He's saying "you don't understand" to his 'momma'. By turning V4 into a bridge, you are basically saying change the music there, make it "lift" etc...sure, that would work, and for the very reasons you mentioned.

At the time, I was going for simple & old-timey; but I could hear a bridge there, that goes to the relative minor, and then maybe resolves through the major 2 to the 5.
