The way I wrote back then was a) listen to a song you really like ... b) get the rhythm of the melody strongly in your head
c) write a new lyric to that dummy melody d) (to paraphrase you...) recompose the damn thing...haha...

Thanks John. I found a bunch of goodies on old archived DATs and CD's that I am surprised still played. I was wise enough to transfer every tape I owned to digital about a decade ago--then promptly moved on, forgot about them...ah, the memories!
