I didn't see the "rest" of the article, but I believe the "privacy" issue is this: you have to dig through a lot of innocent people's private records to ferret out the few wrong-doers. So the question is: Is the crime or potential public harm worth giving up privacy rights to government (or private) organizations?

Most of the time the answer to this question is a resounding "NO!".
