Jim, it's been that way for decades and the reason what was then called outlaw country came about with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Billie Joe Shaver, Michael Martin Murphey, Joe Ely, Jimmy Dale Gilmore and others was the discontent with the Nashville Sound.
The Nashville Sound has, indeed, morphed over the years and is still much too much cookie cutter music with a good number of artists playing the same thing in a slightly different guise. Country music with a rap, SKA, or raggae beat and vocals??? Give me a break. Other than those styles being incorporated the rest is pretty much pop rock with some of it having an edge. MAB is pretty much right on in his description of those changes.

Jim, IMHO, if you want to hear decent country music dial into what is now called Americana and also Alt Country.
