I shoot for 3 - 4 minutes for these reasons and get a little worried if it comes in much under 3.
Thinking back, there were a lot of classic rock songs that were too long and were edited for radio. Crossroads by Cream and Light My Fire by the Doors are examples.
Songs that are too short don't lend themselves to concert performances or dancing as well.
