PS:

On a personal note, as being in the business, I do like the longer songs and solos from people on writer's nights, open mics, writer's showcases, etc. what have you. It gives me longer time to go to the bathroom, make phone calls, check e-mails etc. That is actually the reason those initial longer songs got on the radio in the first place.

Before tape cartridges, all commercials, voice overs, etc. had to be done live. So longer songs gave the DJ's the chance to go to the bathroom, eat, have sex, smoke pot and still be back before it ended. Thus: American Pie, Inna Gadda Divida, Free Bird, Nights in White Satin, Money, long playing albums like Dark Side of the Moon, and pretty much any of the art rock of the 60's-70's.
