Gawrsh has this ever been Fun! Jimmie, I LOVE Ya Man/Keep Tellin' It Like It IS!
Early in my "Career" I made friends with Bob Monaco..3 Dog Night's Manager/Bigtime L.A. Producer. HIS Songwriting Cassette Course was a mere $50..BEST Money I ever spent..(& Trust Me, I've read MANY a Book..including Jerry V's.) He tried to get Gladys Knight to cut a song I'd co-written..&, had she, I'd have been "Somebody" back in 1985..&..heh..life woulda been a lot different.
Back to Reality: Bob quit Producing for (I think it was Capitol Records) and went Indie. Apparently his luck changed..& he literally Disappeared. Years later, I found out he'd moved from L.A. & was (& still is) selling real estate in Vegas. (I'll add I also heard he's workin' on Chakka Khan's "Comeback CD"...so never count a Pro Out.)
The Point: MANY a Hero who Makes It and Offers Good Advice in this Grueling Biz gets maimed by it.
My bit of (Free) Advice is Yeah, Do Whatever You Think'll Work, Have some FUN at it, and develop ALTERNATIVE Routes to Happiness (& even Fame) WHILE you're workin' on the Music Biz.
(Check out the budding Music Career of that Blonde Atlanta Chick on that Housewife Reality Show.)
Life just ain't "Fair"...though I DO understand your Angst, Bro Jimmie!
Best Wishes & Big Hugs, Stan

"If you are stuck in your musical composing, be unreasonable. Change your environment. If you are stuck in your lyrical efforts, instead of forcing the same old words out, force yourself to do unreasonable things." -Brian Austin Whitney
