Miranda:
I've already stated that I will gladly apologize to you if I'm wrong but based on your posts here (which is all we have to go by), you are either out to make a quick buck or you are incredibly naive about the music business. Either way, your own statements do not give us any reason to believe that anyone should have faith in your abilities as a promoter.
Consider that your first couple of posts indicated that you were the owner/director of a successful promotional firm. Yet, your most recent post states that you only started doing this in October and you got lucky. Please explain how this would lead anyone to believe that you have any skills of promotion that would benefit anyone? No doubt, luck plays a part but you have to have skill as a promoter and a lot more knowledge of the industry than you have demonstrated thus far.
Other facts that should cause anyone to raise an eyebrow...
1) The fact that you are apparently not aware that a compilation CD is generally not an effective promotional tool and that artists should not be charged money to have their songs included. FYI: Being charged to be on a compilation CD is a HUGE red flag in this biz that you presume to know so much about. Generally, it's to be avoided like the plague.
2) The fact that you started off posting as if you are a bigger player in the biz than you apparently are. This shows that you were either hoping someone more naive than you appear to be would respond or that your luck has given you a bigger ego trip than your abilities can back up this early in the game.
3) The fact that you stated that you do not even charge to review an artist's press kit. As we have already pointed out, no legitimate promoter charges to review a press kit. It just doesn't happen. Now if you were offering a critiquing service for press kits, that would be a different story but IMO, the value of that is even questionable.
4) The fact that when you were questioned, you were very vague and elusive, though nice about it. How many posts did it take you to give us some idea of your affiliations and potential references? If you were good at what you do, that would likely be one of the first things you would have mentioned.
5) The fact that you were trying to tell Randy what he might do if he was serious about his career instead of addressing the issue he correctly brought up about the fee for the compilation CD. You came off rather preachy like you knew more about the business than he did and you didn't even know anything about him.
What are we to think? I sincerely hope you are just new at this and maybe just got a little big-headed because you've had some luck. If so, welcome to the board, check around and soak all the info you can about the biz. It'll only be useful to you as you try to do a better job for your clients.
If you are a scam artist (which I certainly wouldn't expect you to admit), please move on. You won't find any suckers here.
If you are by some chance legit, I wish you all the luck but you've got a LOT to learn.
