I'm willing to give Miranda the benefit of the doubt that she actually wants to be a legit promoter. Otherwise, I don't think she'd keep coming back to comment.

On the other hand, there are many folks out there whose enthusiasm far outweighs their knowledge of the music business. Those are the people I don't wish to see waste their hard earned money for nothing. While I am by no means some guru of the industry, I stand confidently by my statement that the types of compilation CD's we've discussed here are, at best, a waste of time and money. At worst, they are the tool of an outright and deliberate scam.

Having worked in the radio industry, I can say from my personal experience that these types of CD's received NO attention. Some people joke that they get used as coasters, but I wouldn't even say that. They were the equivalent of those annoying advertising flyers you get in the mail that go directly to the trash without as much as a glance.

If you are an independent artist trying to market or promote yourself (or your CD), go buy a copy of the Indie Bible, get a slot on CDBaby, get a website...do a hundred different things with the money you were tempted to pay to be on that compilation CD. I would almost guarantee that your interests will be better served by doing so.
