Knute, I was born in North Central Alabama (lived there until I was 8) and there is some truth to the thought that there is not a high priority placed on grammar and spelling - at least among the "common folks" (common not to be construed as a bad thing. I'm common and proud of it.). In fact, spelling and grammar are not high priorities among many of the common folks I've met all over the country. But that's no excuse not to try to be proficient at both.

Like I said, I hate to play grammar cop because all of us can mispell words and use incorrect grammar as a matter of course. However, when you are in a business of any kind, it simply creates a better overall impression among those with whom you wish to do business.

In no way does poor grammar and spelling mean that someone is not capable. I'm sure most people would agree that some of the smartest people they've known are not formally educated while many people with college degrees seem to be idiots. Overall, it's just better for your business to use proper grammer and correct spelling.
