Actually, Josh Groban did not write the song YOU LIFT ME UP...he merely covered a song with lyrics written by Ireland's Brendan Graham - and put to music by Norwegian musician, Rolf Lovland. It was originally recorded by Lovland's New Age band "Secret Garden" on the "Once in a Red Moon" album, released in 2001. The original vocals were by Irish singer Brian Kennedy. My only point in bringing this up is to show that the original song (below) has more than one verse. I don't know what Groban actually put on his release...but he is such a mega-star that he can pretty much sing the phone book if he chooses to. That is pretty much the same with artists like Elvis and Frank. They could get away with things we can't hope to unless we achieve that same stature in the industry. Our songs HAVE to be better than just acceptable.

While some of the classic songs are still near and dear to all of us...it is really tough to write a simple song these days that actually says something. Even film and tv songs, while needing to leave out too many specifics...still have to have some meat on the bones or furniture in the room. I work with the film industry (Director of Development for FilmNashville www.filmnashville.org ). I definitely do NOT pretend to have all the answers or any clout in that regard...but I do listen a lot. I sat in on the screening for the film AUGUST RUSH this past June when they were making decisions regarding what music to use in the film. Very revealing process.
