Nice Man With Money
2001 Jeanay Say Qua

Although he knew I wasn't dense
my father tried to push some sense
into my head
about the man
who might affect my future plan
"Look at the facts and don't berate
the alarming rise of the divorce rate
you might be cute
to some, a beauty
but loosened morals means lessened duty
You don't need to learn a hard lesson
just go to school and get
a profession"

I tried to follow what he said that made sense
Although I knew I wasn't dense
my wanderlust
and creative heart
seemed to override the intellectual part
So unconcerned with the idea of marriage
just give me a plane boat train or carriage
with my own two eyes
and my own two feet
just let me observe the man on the street

If no one ever asked me why
I wouldn't even try to try
to explain the need
I had to go
and why the world intrigued me so

I remember Loveness from Zimbabwe
with thirteen children
a fourteenth on the way
wondering why I didn't hurry
to add to the population flurry

And Ruby the eccentric traveler
who could read people's palms
and could see the future
She said, "You don't have to worry yet honey,
just find yourself a nice man,
with money!"

And in Jamaica there was Scaramoochie
All huffy and a puffy and a
tryin to smooch me
He said,"Don miss de mos greates ting in life
Me have four or five pickney
but me nah have nah wife!"

And Okaasan from Osaka writes me to this day
how she worries, "Jeanchan no koto shimpai"
so she'll say
If love hasn't gotten to get me bewitched
couldn't a matchmaker help me get hitched?

But I dream of Cuba
and a really good dance
Fresh seafood, cigars, and really big plants
I dream of a villa where all friends can come
to escape from the stress, ratrace, and humdrum
I'm hearing music with poetry in it
and I'm seeing cotton with bright patterns on it
With no man and no master's
I might end up in the skids
but I don't dream of suburbs with 2.5 kids

Even the love of my life decided to run
when it looked like my time for children had come
My friend Molly one day somehow knew it was time
To get a house and a husband and doctor in line
If that works for her
but I beg to defer
I want romance and true love
or not much at all
I've got nothing against it, but all that I see
Makes me wonder much less about this mystery

So I'll sing
and I'll dance
and I'll dream
and I'll bet
I'll still hear them all ask
Aren't you settled down yet?!
