Woke up to find No sunshine. Went to the kitchen, Sat down to dine On blues for breakfast, A brand new recipe That makes a single serving Of lonesome misery.
Verse
Greasy spoon at noon, My order's no surprise. I get the blues plate special With an extra side of sighs. Coffee break and heart ache, I have 'em twice a day. Got a dinner date with sorrow And I just can't get away.
Bridge
Now I wish for a dish Of tenderness, but - no. All I eat is something Sweet and low.
And so,
Verse
My pantry's never empty. With all the tears I store I can pour a pint at midnight And another one at four. When dawnin' turns to mornin', I know it's gonna be Only blues for breakfast 'Til you're home and here with me.
It's just the blues for breakfast 'Til you're back home with me.
